Borrelli Punishes Trabzonspor's Passive Press

Rizespor lead Trabzonspor 2-0 at half-time at the Çaykur Didi Stadyumu, and the scoreline is the least of Trabzonspor's problems. Gennaro Borrelli scored twice inside 32 minutes, both right-footed, and both from situations that exposed the structural gap between the two sides' shapes.

Rizespor set up in a 4-1-4-1, Trabzonspor in a 4-2-3-1. The hosts' single pivot screened the space between Trabzonspor's double pivot and the attacking line, forcing the visitors wide and then collapsing on the second ball. The result was a first half in which Trabzonspor held 56% possession but managed zero shots on target and 0.12 xG — 0.04 of it from open play.

Borrelli's opener came in the 12th minute from regular play, a 0.62 xG chance he converted with his right foot. No assist was credited. Twenty minutes later, Adedire Awokoya Mebude released him on a fast break and Borrelli finished again, this time from 0.66 xG. Two shots, two goals, 1.29 xG for the striker alone.

Trabzonspor's Possession Without Penetration

The visitors' 4-2-3-1 was supposed to create overloads in the half-spaces. Instead, it produced 217 accurate passes — 84% completion — and 99 passes in Rizespor's half, but only nine touches in the box and three shots, none on target. Rizespor, with 44% of the ball, generated six shots, five on target, three big chances and 1.67 xG. The hosts' open-play xG alone (1.67) dwarfed Trabzonspor's total (0.12).

Emrecan Bulut carried Trabzonspor's only meaningful threat, accumulating 0.27 xG without a goal. Ibrahim Olawoyin managed 0.02 xG. Zakaria Ariss and Mebude registered no xG, though Mebude's contribution came as the assist on Borrelli's second. The duels were nearly even — 30-31 in Rizespor's favour — but the hosts won the ones that mattered in the final third.

The Second-Half Question

The half-time numbers tell a story of efficiency against sterility. Rizespor scored twice from 1.67 xG; Trabzonspor mustered 0.12 xG from 56% possession. The hosts' 4-1-4-1 has been compact without being passive, and Trabzonspor's 4-2-3-1 has been expansive without being dangerous.

Rizespor's second-half xG will drop by 1.67 from the first half if the pattern holds — the question is whether Trabzonspor can raise theirs from 0.12. On this evidence, the visitors need a structural change, not just more of the ball. Borrelli, with two goals from 1.29 xG, has already done the damage.
