Rennes have confirmed their starting XI for tonight's Ligue 1 meeting with Lille at Roazhon Park, and the shape is a 3-5-2: three centre-backs, five across midfield, two forwards. Franck Haise has handed Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal a place in the side, while Adrien Thomasson also starts. Davide Ancelotti's Lille line up in a 4-3-3, with Alexsandro Ribeiro, Benjamin André and goalkeeper Berke Özer all named.

Rennes Set the Block

The home side's 3-5-2 is built to squeeze the middle. Three centre-backs cover the width of the box, the five across midfield can collapse onto Lille's three-man central unit, and the two forwards stay high enough to stop the away side from pushing both full-backs forward at once. It is a shape that asks Rennes to defend narrow and force Lille wide, where the touchline becomes an extra defender.

Aït Boudlal's inclusion gives Haise a direct runner in the front two, while Thomasson's starting role adds a passer who can link the midfield five to the forwards. The selection points to a Rennes side willing to concede possession in harmless areas and strike on the break.

Lille's 4-3-3 Looks to Stretch

Ancelotti's 4-3-3 gives Lille natural width from the wingers and a midfield three that can rotate the ball from side to side. Benjamin André anchors that trio, and Alexsandro Ribeiro starts in defence. Berke Özer takes the gloves.

The tactical question is whether Lille can pull Rennes' midfield five out of shape. If the away side's full-backs advance, Rennes' wing-backs must decide whether to track them or hold the central block. That decision will determine whether Lille find crossing angles or run into a packed box.

What the Selections Say

Rennes have not named a conservative XI. Aït Boudlal and Thomasson both start, which suggests Haise wants his side to carry a threat when they win the ball back rather than simply absorb pressure for 90 minutes. Lille, meanwhile, have gone with a recognised front three and a settled midfield, a sign Ancelotti expects his side to control the ball and probe for openings.

The match pits Rennes' narrow block against Lille's width. Rennes will look to keep the game compact and strike through Aït Boudlal and Thomasson. Lille will look to stretch the pitch, get their wingers isolated against Rennes' wing-backs, and force the home side to defend crosses. Kick-off is next at Roazhon Park.
