Club Brugge lead PSV Eindhoven 1-0 at half-time at Philips Stadion, Nicolò Tresoldi's 25th-minute header from a corner separating the sides in a Champions League matchday four tie that PSV have largely controlled without converting.
Tresoldi met Joaquin Seys's delivery from the set piece, a chance worth 0.20 xG, and Brugge have that single moment to show for a half in which they were second-best on most of the underlying numbers.
PSV's Volume, Brugge's Edge
PSV have had 52 per cent of the ball and 12 shots to Brugge's seven, five on target to two. Their 1.42 xG is the higher figure, split 1.07 from open play and 0.35 from set plays. Brugge's 1.11 xG is split 0.79 open play and 0.31 set plays. The visitors have the better big-chance count, three to two, and more touches in the box, 19 to 14.
That is the shape of the half: PSV with more of the ball and more shots, Brugge with the goal and the more dangerous individual openings. Peter Bosz's side have passed more accurately, 83 per cent to 80, and completed 105 passes in Brugge's half to 74. None of it has produced an equaliser.
The Set-Piece Detail
Brugge's goal came from a corner, and it is the decisive detail of the half. The visitors have leaned on dead balls for their threat — 0.31 of their 1.11 xG — and Tresoldi's header is the return. PSV's own set-play output, 0.35 xG, has not been converted.
Shots by player
Sven Mijnans had the most shots, 4.
Figures in shots
Match stats at half-time
PSV Eindhoven created the better chances: 1.42 xG to 1.11.
PSV's shape is a 4-2-3-1; Brugge line up 4-1-4-1. The home side's territorial control is reflected in the passing and possession numbers, but Brugge's single-goal lead is the only figure that counts at the break.
What PSV Need
Sergiño Dest has 0.55 xG without a goal, Carlos Forbs 0.68 without a goal. Those two carry PSV's clearest openings of the half. Hans Vanaken and Ivan Perišić are the Brugge names to watch as the visitors defend the lead.
PSV have six fouls to Brugge's two, and Brugge have the half's only yellow card. The home side have won 23 duels to 20. The task for Bosz's men is straightforward: turn the chance volume into a goal before Brugge's set-piece advantage decides the night.
