The Athletics Integrity Unit provisionally suspended Peres Jepchirchir on Friday, 23 October 2026, after an out-of-competition sample collected in Kenya returned an adverse analytical finding for EPO. The sample was collected before the Sydney Marathon in August, which Jepchirchir won in 2:18:31.
The sequence matters. The collection preceded the race; the announcement followed it. Sydney was her season debut after she withdrew from the 2026 London Marathon due to injury. She is 33, the reigning world marathon champion after winning in Tokyo in 2025, and the 2021 Olympic marathon gold medallist. She set a personal best of 2:14:43 at the December 2025 Valencia Marathon, finishing second.
A provisional suspension is not a final ruling. It bars the athlete while the case is investigated. That distinction governs what happens next: the finding is provisional, and the outcome of the investigation will determine whether her recent results, including Sydney, are affected.
The case lands inside a pattern. More than 140 Kenyan athletes have been suspended or banned by the AIU since 2017, a group that includes women's marathon world record-holder Ruth Chepngetich. Jepchirchir's provisional suspension adds a reigning world champion to that count while the underlying case remains open.
Several questions remain unanswered. The exact date the sample was collected in Kenya has not been stated. Whether the Sydney victory or other recent results could be annulled if the case is upheld is likewise unresolved.
What is established: an adverse analytical finding for EPO, a provisional suspension announced on 23 October 2026, and a Sydney win recorded before that announcement. What is not: any final conclusion about the athlete or her results.
