NCDC: Nigeria's 2027 election may be postponed if Ebola spreads
NCDC Director-General Jide Idris says Nigeria's 2027 election could be postponed if Ebola threatens public safety, stressing no decision is imminent.
Nigeria's disease-control chief has said the country's 2027 general election could be postponed if the Ebola outbreak spreads far enough to threaten public safety and make the polls difficult to run. Dr. Jide Idris, Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, made the statement on Channels Television's Politics Today, in remarks reported on October 26 and 27.
Idris was explicit that no delay is under consideration now. "We hope the election will not be postponed, but if the thing gets wide enough, that might be considered," he said. "As at now, there is no need for that." The trigger, as he described it, is the scale of the outbreak — not the calendar.
He also pushed back on the idea that the health sector would wield a disease as a political instrument. "We in the health sector did not use disease issues as a political weapon," he said.
Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case this month. The patient was a woman who travelled from Uganda to Abuja on October 3 and tested positive on October 19. The case was identified as the Bundibugyo strain. Idris said health authorities had tracked the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for months before the virus reached Nigeria, and that international travel and population movement made importation likely.
The 2027 general election is scheduled to begin in January, with the presidential and National Assembly elections set for January 16. Political parties and aspirants are already preparing, and the Independent National Electoral Commission plans to deploy artificial intelligence for the vote.
What Idris has done is attach a public-health condition to a fixed electoral date. That is not a postponement announcement. Whether that holds depends on facts not yet in evidence: how many cases Nigeria records in the coming weeks, what thresholds the agency would use, and whether the electoral commission has any plan for absorbing a health shock.
For now, the election date stands.
