Oslo city hall at night, for a story on Trump saying he doesn't want Norwegians over the Nobel.

At a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday, President Trump called Norway a "shithouse country" and said he did not want anyone from Norway, tying the remarks to his frustration over not winning the Nobel Peace Prize. He said he would welcome immigrants from certain countries but not Norway "because I didn't get the Nobel Prize." He also said, "Frankly, Norway sucks."

There was no official indication of a new U.S. policy on Norwegian immigrants. The remarks were rally rhetoric, not an announced change in immigration rules.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide responded on Monday, telling NRK that Trump "knows very well that the Nobel committee is independent" and that Norway has reminded him of this. That is the substantive correction: the prize is not awarded by the Norwegian government, and the committee that does award it is independent of it.

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize went to Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, a South African-born jurist and former U.N. human rights chief, for her efforts to promote peace and international law. Her selection was not a decision Norway's government made, and not one it could reverse.

What this episode tests is not immigration policy. It tests whether a personal grievance over an international award spills into the public treatment of a longstanding partner. Trump's remarks put the independence of the Norwegian Nobel Committee — and the diplomatic norm of separating awards from state relations — in the spotlight. It restated the mechanism.

Several questions remain open. Whether the administration takes any formal policy action affecting Norwegian immigration is unknown; the rally remark alone does not establish one. How Norway's government responds beyond the foreign minister's comments is also unclear. And whether the Nobel Committee or its Norwegian hosts face any pressure to address Trump's claims about the prize has not been indicated.

What is established is narrower and clearer: Trump made the remarks at a campaign rally and tied them to the Nobel; Norway's foreign minister said the committee is independent and that Norway has reminded Trump of it; and no new U.S. policy on Norwegian immigrants has been announced.
