Napoli's Venezia Defeat Exposes the Gap Between Volume and Value

Napoli's 1-0 loss at bottom club Venezia is the latest sign that a squad in transition is creating chances without converting them into points.

1-0
Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo

Napoli travelled to the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo on October 17 and lost 1-0 to Venezia, a side that had lost all seven of their matches this season between Serie A and the Coppa Italia and were making their debut under new coach Davide Nicola. Akor Adams scored the only goal four minutes after half-time, running onto a long ball and seeing his finish deflect in off Amir Rrahmani. Kevin De Bruyne, rested from the start, had a penalty saved by Venezia goalkeeper Filip Stankovic. The result left Napoli ninth in Serie A, nine points off the title pace, with Inter leading on 19 points and Roma second, two points off top.

The raw numbers from FotMob describe a match Napoli controlled almost entirely. They had 71 per cent possession to Venezia's 29, took 29 shots to nine, put ten on target to four, and won 12 corners to none. Their expected goals figure was 2.36 against Venezia's 0.98. They completed 658 accurate passes, against an average of 419.4 across their earlier 2026/2027 matches in all competitions, and made 383 passes in the opposition half, against an earlier average of 214.0.

Process Without Points

Yet the scoreline reads Venezia 1, Napoli 0. Napoli's goals minus expected goals in this match was -2.36, against an average of 0.0 across their earlier 2026/2027 matches. They created four big chances and converted none; Venezia created none and scored one. The gap between what Napoli built and what they took from the game is the story of their season in miniature. Their league record under Massimiliano Allegri in 2026/2027 stands at three wins, one draw and three defeats from seven games, a return of 1.43 points per game. For comparison, Napoli's 2017/2018 Serie A campaign under Maurizio Sarri produced 28 wins, seven draws and three defeats, 2.39 points per game over 38 games.

Since the summer, Napoli have added Benoît Badiashile, Vanja Milinković-Savić, Rasmus Højlund, Giovane Nascimento and Alisson Santos, while significant departures include Luis Hasa, Walid Cheddira, Romelu Lukaku, Giovanni Simeone, Lorenzo Lucca and Eljif Elmas. Against Venezia, Napoli were without the injured David Neres, Antonio Vergara, Costantino Favasuli and Alessandro Buongiorno, while Alisson Santos, Matias Olivera and Frank Zambo Anguissa were only fit for the bench. De Bruyne and Højlund were rested. Allegri said afterwards that the team created a great deal but continued to be penalised for costly errors, and called for patience with the players available.

The match reports instead frame Venezia's win as a huge upset built on Stankovic's saves, including the penalty stop from De Bruyne.

Napoli lost 3-1 away to Villarreal in the Champions League days before the Venezia defeat, and the pattern across the season so far is one of attacking output that has not translated into a points return.
