Napoli's 1-1 draw with Lazio at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Sunday offered a point and a brief reprieve, but it did little to close the widening gap between the club's attacking output and its league position. Davide Frattesi gave the visitors a 28th-minute lead, finishing Tijjani Noslin's through ball for his fourth goal of the season, before Alfonso Pedraza's own goal three minutes into the second half — from Noa Lang's cross to the back post — rescued a draw for the hosts.
Lazio's six-game Serie A winning streak was snapped, yet they still moved two points clear at the top on 29 points, 14 ahead of Napoli in 10th.
Process versus points
The raw numbers from Sunday paint a picture of a team that created more than enough to win. Napoli generated 2.35 expected goals to Lazio's 0.86, and 2.05 of that came from open play. They registered three big chances to Lazio's none, and took 15 shots, six on target. Their 32 touches in the opposition box were well above their average of 19.8 across earlier 2026/27 matches in all competitions, while their six corners doubled their previous average of three.
Napoli's goals minus expected goals in this match was -1.35, against an average of 0.0 across their earlier 2026/27 matches. That is the crux: the process improved markedly, but the return did not follow. Whether that is finishing quality, fortune, or something deeper is a question the next matches will answer.
The wider crisis
The draw came amid a backdrop of intense pressure. Napoli had lost to Juventus and Porto — the latter a 4-1 Champions League defeat — and had been placed in a training retreat. Owner Aurelio De Laurentiis visited the training ground for crisis talks, and sporting director Giovanni Manna described the situation before kick-off as 'unacceptable'.
The comparison with Maurizio Sarri's 2017/18 Napoli side is stark. That team averaged 2.39 points per game over 38 Serie A matches, winning 28. Allegri's current side sits on 1.4 points per game from 10. The squad turnover since the summer — with Romelu Lukaku, Giovanni Simeone, Lorenzo Lucca and Eljif Elmas among the departures, and Benoît Badiashile, Rasmus Højlund and others arriving — may help explain why that earlier balance has not returned. But the gap between process and points on Sunday suggests the issues are not merely personnel.
What next?
Lazio, unbeaten under Gennaro Gattuso, will wonder whether this was a one-off stumble against a desperate opponent or the start of a wobble. The point against the league leaders may ease immediate pressure, but it does not close the 14-point chasm to the top or resolve the underlying crisis.
