Marseille have confirmed their starting XI for Sunday's Ligue 1 matchday nine fixture against Toulouse at the CEPAC Vélodrome, and the headline selection is Casper Tengstedt at centre-forward. The Danish striker leads a 4-2-3-1 that also includes Amine Gouiri, Amine Harit and Aron Dønnum in the attacking line behind him. Toulouse, sitting 11th after a 0-0 draw with Troyes last time out, respond with a 4-4-2 that brings Christ Tapé back into the side.

Marseille's Shape: 4-2-3-1 With Tengstedt at the Point

Marseille's 4-2-3-1 puts Tengstedt at the top of the structure, with Gouiri, Harit and Dønnum operating as the three behind him. The double pivot sits in front of a back four, giving Marseille two distinct lines between the midfield screen and the attacking trio. That shape asks the full-backs to provide width while the three behind Tengstedt drift inside to combine.

The selection of Tengstedt as the lone striker is the decisive call. He is the reference point in a front line that otherwise leans toward creators rather than out-and-out finishers. Gouiri and Harit both prefer the ball to feet in half-spaces; Dønnum offers a more direct running threat from the right. Tengstedt's job is to occupy both centre-backs and turn those combinations into penalty-box touches.

Marseille come into the match off a 4-3 win against Le Havre that lifted them to eighth in the table. That result ended a run of inconsistent form and gives the Vélodrome crowd something to build on. The 4-2-3-1 is a shape designed to control possession in midfield while still getting three attackers into the final third. Against a Toulouse side that has just kept a clean sheet, the question is whether Marseille's creators can find Tengstedt between the lines.

Toulouse's 4-4-2 and the Tapé Recall

Toulouse set up in a 4-4-2, with Christ Tapé returning to the starting lineup. The two-bank structure gives them four midfielders across the middle and two strikers ahead of them. That shape is built to compress central spaces and force opponents wide, where the full-backs and wide midfielders can double up.

Tapé's inclusion is the notable change. He adds a physical presence in the middle of the park, and his return suggests Toulouse want to match Marseille's double pivot stride for stride. In a 4-4-2, the two central midfielders must cover a lot of ground against a 4-2-3-1, because the opposition's No. 10 can drift into the gap between the lines. Tapé's job is to close that gap.

Toulouse sit 11th after their 0-0 draw with Troyes. That clean sheet is the platform they bring to the Vélodrome. The 4-4-2 is a shape that can frustrate a possession side if the two strikers press the centre-backs and the wide midfielders tuck in to deny central lanes. The risk is that Marseille's three behind Tengstedt find space between Toulouse's midfield and defence.

What the Selections Say About the Match

The two shapes set up a clear structural contrast. Marseille's 4-2-3-1 creates a 3v2 overload in central midfield when the No. 10 drops, while Toulouse's 4-4-2 relies on the two strikers cutting off passes into that No. 10. If Marseille can play through the first line of pressure, Gouiri and Harit will have room to turn. If Toulouse's strikers screen the pivot effectively, Marseille will be forced wide and asked to cross for Tengstedt against two centre-backs.

Tengstedt's role is the one to watch. He is the only out-and-out centre-forward in Marseille's front four, and his ability to hold the ball under pressure will determine whether the creators behind him can get into the box. For Toulouse, Tapé's return is the counterweight: his positioning in the double screen will decide how often Marseille's No. 10 receives between the lines.

Both teams have confirmed their lineups. Marseille go with Tengstedt through the middle in a 4-2-3-1. Toulouse answer with Tapé in a 4-4-2. The Vélodrome will see whether Marseille's creators can unlock a two-bank defence, or whether Toulouse's shape holds firm.
