Michael Carrick has named an unchanged Manchester United starting XI for the visit of Aston Villa, keeping the side that produced a stirring midweek comeback to ease the pressure on his position. United line up in a 4-2-3-1 at Old Trafford, with Bruno Fernandes operating as the No 10 behind the central striker and Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo providing the width in the attacking line.

Unai Emery's Villa arrive on a nine-match winning run across all competitions and set up in the same 4-2-3-1 shape. Boubacar Kamara anchors the midfield pair, tasked with screening the back four and disrupting United's rhythm through the middle. Alysson Edward starts in the attacking line as Villa look to extend their sequence.

The identical shapes put the emphasis on which midfield pair controls the space between the lines. Fernandes drifting inside from the No 10 position will test Kamara's positioning, while United's double pivot must track Villa's runners from deep. Both managers have resisted rotation despite the international break looming, signalling the weight each places on this fixture.

United's Midweek Momentum

Carrick's decision to keep the same XI follows a comeback that may have saved his job. United trailed before Matheus Cunha struck on 71 minutes, converting a Bruno Fernandes pass threaded through the inside-left channel. Fernandes glanced up from around halfway and steered the ball into Cunha's path, and the forward galloped forward to finish. It was a classic United riposte, and Carrick has rewarded the players who delivered it.

Fernandes remains the creative hub. His ability to find passes between the lines is United's primary route to breaking down a Villa side that has conceded sparingly during its run. Amad Diallo and Mbeumo offer pace in the wide areas, but both will need to track back when Villa's full-backs push forward.

Villa's Winning Machine

Emery's side has won nine straight matches, a run that has lifted them into contention at the top end of the table. The 4-2-3-1 shape gives Villa flexibility: Kamara and his midfield partner can sit deep or press high, while the attacking trio behind the striker rotates to create overloads.

Alysson Edward's inclusion adds a direct threat. Villa have shown they can win in different ways during this streak, and Emery will back his players to handle the Old Trafford atmosphere. The manager said before the match that everyone is well, suggesting no late fitness concerns.

What the Selections Say

Both teams trusting the same shape means the match may hinge on individual duels. Fernandes against Kamara is the standout: United's captain will look to receive between the lines, while Kamara's job is to intercept and launch counters. If Kamara wins that battle, Villa's front four can isolate United's defence.

Carrick's unchanged selection also reflects a lack of rotation options he trusts, or a belief that momentum matters more than freshness. With the international break next, fatigue is less of a factor. The same cannot be said for Villa, whose winning run has demanded high intensity across multiple competitions.

Kick-off at Old Trafford is next. The team sheets are in, the shapes are set, and the only thing left is whether United's midweek spark can survive against the league's most in-form side.
