Lyon and Nice have confirmed their starting XIs for Sunday's Ligue 1 meeting at Groupama Stadium, and the two shapes tell the story of the afternoon before a ball is kicked. Lyon line up in a 4-3-3. Nice answer with a 3-4-2-1.

Lyon's Front Three and the Wahi Question

Elye Wahi starts through the middle for Les Gones, the focal point of a front three that asks him to run the channels and hold the ball long enough for the wide forwards to arrive. Abner is named at left-back, and his overlap is the mechanism Lyon will use to stretch a back three that has to decide, every time, whether the wing-back drops or the left-sided centre-back steps out.

That is the first real question of the match. A 4-3-3 against a 3-4-2-1 creates a deliberate mismatch on the flanks: Lyon can double up on the Nice wing-backs, but only if their midfield three covers the space behind Abner when he goes. Axel Witsel's positioning in that midfield is the insurance policy. If he sits, Lyon can commit bodies forward. If he is dragged wide, Nice's two attacking midfielders get the half-spaces they want.

Lyon come into this one looking to keep pace with the Ligue 1 pacesetters, and the selection reflects that ambition rather than caution. Wahi leading the line is a statement about how they intend to play: on the front foot, with a recognised centre-forward rather than a false nine dropping in.

Nice's Back Three and the Counter-Punch

Nice's 3-4-2-1 is built to absorb exactly the kind of pressure Lyon's shape generates. Three centre-backs against one striker means Wahi is outnumbered centrally, and the two attacking midfielders behind him are positioned to receive the first pass out of the block and turn defence into a counter in one movement.

Clinton Mata's role on the right of that defensive unit matters. He has to manage the space between the right centre-back slot and the wing-back ahead of him, and that is precisely where Lyon will try to overload. Gauthier Hein, operating in the attacking line behind the striker, is the player Nice need to link the block to the break.

The context sharpens the stakes. Nice climbed to ninth after a 2-1 win over Strasbourg, and they arrive with their winning groove apparently restored. Lyon dropped to fourth after a 2-1 defeat at Lens, so the gap between the two clubs' moods is narrower than the table suggests. A win for either side changes the early-season narrative.

What the Selections Say

Both managers have picked recognisable, first-choice-looking XIs rather than rotating for rotation's sake. Lyon's 4-3-3 with Wahi central and Abner advanced is an attacking configuration. Nice's 3-4-2-1 with Mata in the back three and Hein in the pocket is a counter-attacking one. The match is therefore set up as a possession-versus-transition contest, decided by whether Lyon's midfield can protect the space Abner vacates and whether Nice's two tens can find Hein between the lines.

Kick-off at Groupama Stadium will show which shape imposes itself first. The team sheets have already made the argument.
