Lille Top Ligue 1 After Le Havre Win — But the Bottom Club Asked the Questions

Lille are provisionally top of Ligue 1. That is the headline the table will carry after Dilane Bakwa's fifth-minute goal gave them a 1-0 win over Le Havre at the Decathlon Arena - Stade Pierre-Mauroy on 10 October. It is also, on the evidence of the match itself, a misleading one.

They left having produced the more convincing attacking display. The raw numbers from FotMob tell a story that sits awkwardly beside the result: possession finished 47-53 in the visitors' favour, expected goals 1.19 to 1.30, shots 5 to 17, shots on target 1 to 2. Only in big chances did Lille lead, three to nil — the metric that best explains how a side can score early and then spend the evening absorbing pressure.

The gap between the scoreline and the performance

The reporting matches the numbers. Get Football News France described Lille's performance as unconvincing, noting that Le Havre, playing very high up the pitch, gradually asserted their dominance after conceding, with Josh Maja failing on two occasions to find the net and equalise. That is not the portrait of a league leader controlling a match against the division's weakest side. It is the portrait of a team holding on.

The touch data sharpens the point. Lille managed 11 touches in the opposition box here, against an average of 22.6 across their earlier 2026/27 matches in all competitions. One match is not a trend, but the contrast between this figure and their own season average is stark enough to note. Bakwa's early strike was, in effect, the whole attacking output.

There is context. Lille came into the fixture looking to reassert themselves after a 2-1 defeat at Nice interrupted what had been a promising early run. Before that loss, they had gone four matches without defeat.

The match was also marred by injury to Tiago Santos, substituted at 22' in a change logged with M. Goffi.

The departures question

Lille's summer business brought in Maurits Kjærgaard, Orlando Gill, Ayase Ueda, Noah Edjouma, Loun Srdanovic and Bakwa, while Ayyoub Bouaddi, Ugo Raghouber, Mohamed Bayo and Matias Fernandez-Pardo left. It stays a question the next matches will answer, not a verdict.

What can be said is narrower and firmer. A team top of Ligue 1 on 13 points was outshot 17-5 at home by a team on two points. A team about to face Arsenal recorded one shot on target. Davide Ancelotti, the figure the reporting identifies as the one who will probably take nothing but the win from this home fixture, has a week to decide whether that was a bad night against awkward opponents or the first sign that the balance has shifted.

If Lille control midfield and create chances in those two matches, the Le Havre evening becomes a footnote to a good start. If they do not, the table will stop flattering them.
