LA Galaxy vs San Diego FC: Tactical Questions Before Kick-Off at Dignity Health Sports Park

Hirving Lozano starts for LA Galaxy against San Diego FC on Sunday at Dignity Health Sports Park, facing the club he left after months on the sideline.

The 31-year-old Mexican winger arrived at the Galaxy following a public falling-out with the 2025 league debutants, and his selection gives the home side a proven attacking outlet on the right of their front three. Lozano framed the move in straightforward terms.

"The Galaxy is one of the most important clubs in MLS," he said. "It was a great opportunity, and well, I took it. I think it was the right decision."

Both teams confirmed 4-3-3 lineups, so the match sets up as a mirror. The midfield three on each side will decide who controls tempo, and the central third is where this one is likely to be settled.

Godoy Anchors, Bakambu Leads the Line

Aníbal Godoy sits at the base of San Diego's midfield. His job is to break up play and recycle possession, and how well he shields the back four will shape how much freedom San Diego's full-backs have to push forward.

Cédric Bakambu leads the Galaxy attack. Anders Dreyer provides width and creativity from the right, while Alejandro Alvarado and Christopher Mcvey give the home side legs in midfield. The question for the Galaxy is whether that trio can feed Bakambu often enough to make the 4-3-3 function as more than a shape on paper.

San Diego's puzzle is different. Without Lozano, the visitors need a new source of penetration from wide areas. Their front three will look to stretch the Galaxy full-backs and open space for late runners from midfield, a pattern that has worked when Godoy wins the ball high up the pitch.

What the Selections Say

The Galaxy's XI points to a side willing to play through the middle rather than around it. Alvarado and Mcvey are both comfortable receiving under pressure, and their ability to turn out of tight spaces will determine whether the Galaxy progress the ball into the final third without resorting to long diagonals toward Bakambu.

San Diego's selection leans more direct. With Godoy sitting deep, the visitors can commit their full-backs forward and attack the Galaxy's back four with numbers. The risk is a Galaxy counter led by Dreyer or Lozano catching them out of position.

The match carries a personal edge for Lozano. He faces the club he left after a public falling-out, and a strong performance would validate the decision he described. San Diego, meanwhile, will want to show they have moved on without him.

The Stakes

Neither side has produced in-play attacking totals yet this season, so this is a chance to establish an identity. For the Galaxy, it is about integrating Lozano and turning possession into chances for Bakambu. For San Diego, it is about proving their 4-3-3 can generate goals without their former star.

Kick-off is set for 2:30 AM UTC at Dignity Health Sports Park. Both teams have confirmed their lineups, and both will line up in a 4-3-3. The tactical mirror makes the midfield battle the decisive detail: whoever wins the second balls and controls the central third will likely control the match.
