Kim’s Hypersonic Missile Launch Undercuts Seoul’s Dialogue Offer After DMZ Landmine

North Korea fired an intermediate-range strategic missile equipped with a hypersonic warhead into the East Sea at dawn on October 3, 2026. Leader Kim Jong-un oversaw the drill, state media reported, describing it as training for missile troops and a demonstration of the “reliability and fatality” of the country’s strategic offensive means.
The missile flew an estimated 680 kilometers with a maximum altitude of 90 kilometers, according to Japan’s Defense Ministry, and landed in the Sea of Japan outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. South Korea’s military gave a longer range estimate of about 1,000 kilometers.
The launch came two days after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung called for restoring trust and resuming dialogue with the North. Lee’s October 1 appeal followed a row over a landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone that injured three South Korean soldiers.
Missile flight range estimates in kilometers
South Korea's military estimated a longer flight range for the missile than Japan's Defense Ministry.

State media quoted him saying that developing strategic weapons is “indispensable” for national security and that the country must “constantly and repeatedly make the enemy recognize the reliability and fatality of our strategic offensive means.” He described the launch as “a form of exercising deterrent” and called for bolstering the nuclear war deterrent.
The timing and rhetoric suggest a calibrated response. By launching a hypersonic-capable missile immediately after Seoul’s call for talks, Pyongyang signaled that weapons development takes priority over diplomacy. The emphasis on “fatality” underscores an uncompromising posture, while the hypersonic warhead—if operational—would challenge regional missile defenses and reinforce North Korea’s nuclear deterrent.
The launch escalates military tensions on the peninsula at a moment when the landmine incident had already frayed relations. It leaves Lee’s dialogue proposal unanswered and raises questions about how the United States and South Korea will respond, both militarily and diplomatically.
