John Healey resignation claim: what the confirmed Budget record actually shows

An uncorroborated resignation tip lands days before the Budget. The confirmed record shows John Healey still set to deliver his first Budget on 28 October 2026.

A resignation claim is circulating around the Chancellor days before the Budget. The confirmed record shows John Healey still scheduled to present his first Budget as Chancellor of the Exchequer on 28 October 2026.

That date is the anchor here. The Commons Library briefing states plainly that Healey will deliver his first Budget on 28 October 2026, accompanied by revised forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility. The five-year forecast window extends to 2031/32 for the first time.

The OBR's previous forecast, published in March 2026, predated the escalation of conflict in the Middle East. The OBR acknowledged the conflict "could have very significant impacts on the global and UK economies." That warning is on the record. What the March forecast assumed about the conflict is not.

Some Budget measures are already confirmed. They include a new scheme to support first-time buyers and a renewed commitment to the State Pension triple lock until 2030. Healey has said the Budget will move "money and power out of Westminster, and into every postcode around Britain," and that it will give businesses and families stability.

The resignation claim and the accompanying warning of a "Liz Truss-style crisis" are not corroborated by either of the fetched sources. Who resigned, from what position, and who is said to have warned of a Truss-style crisis are all unanswered. So is whether the 28 October date has changed. It has not changed in the confirmed record.

That gap matters in both directions. If a resignation has happened, it would land in the final days before a Budget already exposed to Middle East-driven energy price pressure, with an OBR forecast that has not yet priced in the escalated conflict — a combination that could unsettle markets and households. If it has not, readers are being told the Chancellor's position and the Budget timetable are in question when the corroborated evidence says otherwise.

What is established: Healey is Chancellor, the Budget is set for 28 October 2026, revised OBR forecasts will accompany it, and the OBR has flagged significant economic risk from the Middle East conflict. What is not established: the resignation, the crisis framing, and the identity of anyone behind it.
