Jeffries Tells Democrats to Skip Retribution. His Base Isn't Buying It.
A day after Democrats' midterm landslide, Hakeem Jeffries urged focus on affordability over payback. Progressive critics are already pushing back.

Now he has to hold his coalition together.
The House Minority Leader said on MS NOW's Morning Joe on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, that Democrats should focus on lowering costs rather than pursuing retribution against President Donald Trump. "The American people don't want us to get even; they want us to get things done on their behalf because life is way too expensive," Jeffries said. He added that Democrats "ran on affordability, we won on affordability, and now it's our job to govern on affordability."
At a press conference the same day, Jeffries said no House Democratic caucus member has spoken to him about impeachment. The caucus, he said, has been "relentlessly focused on affordability and accountability."
The comments came a day after Democrats' sweeping midterm victories, which Jeffries called an "American tsunami." The party expects at least 255 House seats once counts are final. House Speaker Mike Johnson declined to seek reelection as House Republican leader following the GOP wipeout.
Democrats plan to introduce affordability-focused legislation in their first 100 hours, including reinstating ACA subsidies, reversing Medicaid cuts, undoing Trump tariffs, and addressing the Iran war. They also plan to ramp up investigations of Trump and his administration.
That dual agenda is where the tension sits. Jeffries' "no getting even" framing drew immediate pushback from progressives, including Princeton historian Kevin Kruse. Some online commenters called for Jeffries not to be elected speaker.
The evidence here is clear on what Jeffries said and what Democrats plan. What remains uncertain is whether his approach will satisfy the progressive base or deepen intra-party divisions before he takes the gavel.
His critics are betting the base wants both. The opening of the new Congress will test which bet pays off.
