Jay-Z will headline Super Bowl LXI - for the NFL partner that books the acts
Jay-Z will headline Super Bowl LXI. His company Roc Nation, the NFL's live music strategist, will executive produce. The structural question matters most.
Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show on Feb. 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced it Monday night, Oct. 26, during ESPN's broadcast of the Dallas Cowboys-Philadelphia Eagles game.
The announcement itself is straightforward. The structural arrangement behind it is not.
Roc Nation, Jay-Z's entertainment company, holds a standing partnership with the NFL as the league's live music entertainment strategist. It will also executive produce this halftime show. So the entity that helps shape the league's live music programming is now producing a show headlined by its own founder.
Commissioner Roger Goodell said he had one request when the league first reached its agreement with Roc Nation: that Jay-Z take the stage himself "whenever the moment felt right to him." That framing places the decision inside the partnership rather than outside it. The league's strategist did not win a booking through an external process. He occupies both sides of it.
Jay-Z described the performance as a continuation of a journey from "Reasonable Doubt" to the Super Bowl stage, calling it "thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world's biggest stage." The announcement followed his JAY-Z30 Concert Series at SoFi Stadium on Oct. 23-24, marking the 30th anniversary of "Reasonable Doubt" and the silver anniversary of "The Blueprint."
What this means for the halftime show's artist-selection process is not yet clear. The sources do not say whether other artists were considered, and they do not state whether Jay-Z has previously headlined a Super Bowl halftime show. Roc Nation's dual role as producer and the headliner's company has not been addressed publicly in the announcement materials.
Guest speculation has already begun, with Beyoncé at the top of most lists. She headlined Super Bowl XLVII and appeared as a special guest at Super Bowl 50. Whether she or anyone else joins him is unknown.
The game will air on ESPN, ABC and Disney+, and on mobile devices with NFL+.
The booking is a celebrity story. The pipeline is the bigger one.
