Inter Miami 4-0 D.C. United: the finishing finally matched the chances

Inter Miami's 4-0 win over D.C. United was built on the same chance creation that had been going unrewarded, with the goals at last arriving.

Inter Miami CF beat D.C. United 4-0 at Nu Stadium on Saturday, October 10, 2026, in MLS Matchday 29. The win matters for the Eastern Conference playoff race: Inter Miami entered the weekend third in the East on 46 points from a 12-5-10 record, after a 2-1 loss at Columbus Crew on September 27, while D.C. United arrived on 30 points from 6-8-12, having drawn 3-3 at Vancouver Whitecaps FC on September 26.

The numbers behind the scoreline

The raw figures show a one-sided contest. Inter Miami had 62 per cent possession to D.C. United's 38, 17 shots to 15, nine shots on target to two, five big chances to none, and four corners to two. The expected-goals split was 2.53 to 0.58. Inter Miami's goals minus expected goals in this match was 1.47, against an average of 0.0 across their earlier 2026 matches in all competitions. Their xG here was 2.53, against an average of 1.28 across those earlier matches, and their open-play xG was 2.3 against an average of 1.11.

That is the gap between process and points in one picture. Miami's chance creation in this match was well above what they had produced earlier in 2026, and for once the finishing ran ahead of the underlying numbers rather than behind them. The 15 shots D.C. United managed came with only two on target and no big chances, so the four-goal margin reflects the quality of the chances at both ends rather than the bare shot count.

What the result does and does not settle

Inter Miami lined up in a 4-3-3 under head coach Cristian González, with Dayne St. Clair in goal and Messi, Suárez and Germán Berterame in attack. D.C. United, coached by René Weiler, set up 4-4-2 with Sean Johnson in goal. Weiler's side were 2-3-7 on the road in 2026 entering the match, and a four-goal defeat fits that road record.

The wider context is a squad in transition. Since the summer, Inter Miami have added Casemiro, Rodrigo De Paul, Germán Berterame, Sergio Reguilón, Riquelme Fillipi and Tadeo Allende, while Ricardo Montenegro and Benjamín Cremaschi have departed. That is a small sample, and one four-goal win does not overturn it.

Before this match, Inter Miami's results in all competitions, oldest first, were a 1-1 draw at Chicago, a 2-2 draw with Nashville SC, a 2-0 win over Cruz Azul in the Campeones Cup, a 2-2 draw with San Diego FC, and the 2-1 defeat at Columbus. Those results came alongside chance creation that had not always produced the points to match. Against D.C. United, the goals finally followed the chances.

Whether that becomes a pattern depends on whether the finishing holds when the chances are harder to come by. The next few matches will answer that; this one only raises the question.
