A keyboard with a 'Buy' button and shopping cart icon, for a story on using a Visa gift card on Amazon.

You add a prepaid Visa gift card to Amazon the same way you would add a regular debit or credit card, then select it as your payment method at checkout. It takes a few minutes in your Amazon Wallet, and you will need the card number, expiry date and a billing address. The main catch is that the card has to cover the full order total, because Amazon will not let you split a single order between a prepaid card and another card.

What you need

  • An activated Visa, Mastercard or American Express prepaid gift card with enough balance to cover your whole order, including shipping and taxes.
  • An Amazon account.
  • The card number and expiry date.
  • A billing address. Prepaid cards are not tied to a name or address, so you can use your own address or the card issuer's address.
  • The Amazon website or the Amazon Shopping app.

Step by step

  1. Check that your card is activated and confirm its balance. You can do this by calling the number on the back of the card or visiting the card issuer's website.
  2. Sign in to your Amazon account on the website or in the Amazon Shopping app.
  3. Open your payment settings. On the website, hover over Accounts & Lists in the top right corner and select Account, then find Your Payments. In the app, tap the profile icon, go to Your Account and open Your Payments or Wallet.
  4. Select the option to add a payment method, such as + Add new or Add a payment method.
  5. Choose Add a credit or debit card. A prepaid Visa gift card is added as a card, not as an Amazon gift card.
  6. Enter the card details: card number, expiry date and name on card.
  7. Enter a billing address when prompted. You can use your own address, or call the card issuer's customer service number to ask for the address to use.
  8. Save the card by selecting Add your card, and wait for confirmation that it has been added.
  9. Add the items you want to your cart and proceed to checkout.
  10. At the payment stage, select the prepaid card as your payment method, checking the last four digits if you have several cards saved.
  11. Confirm the order. Amazon will charge the card for the full amount.

Things to know

  • Amazon accepts Visa, Mastercard and American Express prepaid credit or gift cards as payment methods, but restrictions apply.
  • A prepaid card cannot be combined with a credit card on a single order. Your order total, including shipping and taxes, cannot exceed the card balance.
  • You can split payment between one accepted credit or debit card and an Amazon gift card, but you cannot split payment among multiple credit or debit cards.
  • Some card issuers require you to register a prepaid card before you use it. Check the card's product page or paperwork for registration requirements.
  • Some prepaid cards may need a CVV to authorise a purchase. Amazon does not ask for this when you add a payment method, so those cards may not go through.
  • If your card balance is small, one workaround is to use the card to reload your Amazon gift card balance. Amazon will not let you load an amount below $0.50, so if your card has less than that, consider buying an Amazon gift card with the remaining funds instead.
  • Prepaid cards can be used with any merchant that accepts them, not just Amazon.
  • Virtual prepaid cards can only be used online and cannot be used in physical stores.
  • Keep an eye on the card's expiry date. Online transactions with an expired card are likely to be declined.
  • Check the card's terms for any transaction fees, which can reduce the balance available for your order.

Common questions

Can I use a Visa gift card on Amazon? Yes. Amazon accepts Visa, Mastercard and American Express prepaid credit or gift cards, though some restrictions apply.

Can I split an order between a Visa gift card and another card? No. Prepaid cards cannot be combined with credit cards on a single order, and Amazon does not let you split payment among multiple credit or debit cards. Your order total cannot exceed the gift card balance.

Why was my Visa gift card declined on Amazon? Some cards require registration before use, and some need a CVV to authorise a purchase, which Amazon does not collect when you add a payment method. An expired card or an insufficient balance can also cause a decline.

What billing address should I use for a prepaid Visa gift card? Prepaid cards are not tied to a name or address. You can use your own address, or call the card issuer's customer service number to get the address to use.

Can I move my Visa gift card balance to an Amazon gift card? Yes, as a workaround. Once the card is saved as a payment method, you can use it to reload your Amazon gift card balance, as long as the amount is at least $0.50.
