How to Share Data on MTN

You can share data on MTN by transferring from your active data balance, buying a bundle for someone else, or requesting data from a friend. The service is open to all MTN customers and works through USSD codes, SMS, or the myMTN app.

• An active MTN line with a data balance you can transfer from
• At least 100MB left in your data balance after every transfer
• The recipient's MTN phone number
• The myMTN app if you prefer to share visually rather than by code

1. To transfer from your data balance by USSD, dial *312*PhoneNumber*DataAmount#. For example, dial *312*08031235678*100# to transfer 100MB to 08031235678.
2. Alternatively, dial *321*2#, select 1, enter the recipient's number, select the data amount, then confirm the amount to complete the transfer.
3. To transfer by SMS, text Transfer PhoneNumber DataAmount to 312. For example, text Transfer 08031235678 100 to 312 to transfer 100MB to 08031235678.
4. To transfer using the myMTN app, click the Share button, then Data Share.
5. To buy a bundle for a friend, dial *312*Bundle Activation Code*Beneficiary's PhoneNumber#.
6. Or dial *321*2#, select 2, choose the bundle type (Data Plans, Social Bundle, or Video Packs), choose the bundle validity (daily, weekly, or monthly), select the bundle, enter the recipient's number, then confirm the number.
7. To request data from a friend, dial *312*8# or *321*2#, select 3, then enter the donor's number.
8. To view pending requests, dial *312*8# and select 4 to see the list of beneficiaries.
9. To automate a transfer, dial *312*8# or *321*2#, select 5, then enter the beneficiary's number. To add or remove a beneficiary, dial *312*8# or *321*2#, select 5, then Manage Beneficiary List.

• The amounts you can transfer at a time are 100MB, 200MB, 500MB, 1GB, 2GB, 3GB and 5GB.
• You must have at least 100MB in your data balance after every transfer for it to succeed.
• The cumulative amount you can transfer in a day is 5GB.
• You get ten free data transfers per month. After that, a transfer fee applies for subsequent transfers within the calendar month, depending on the data amount. You will get a consent prompt by USSD and SMS before a charged transfer goes through.
• You can only transfer from some Access data plans. Customised or tariff-based bundles cannot be transferred.
• You can send a data request at most five times a day, but you can receive requests multiple times.
• If you have Full DND active on your line, you will not receive data requests.
• No PIN is needed for data gifting. You only enter the beneficiary's number and choose a plan.
• When you recharge from N500 and above, you get a menu with the Gift Data option.

Can I share data if I am on any MTN plan? All MTN customers can access the Gift Data service, but you can only transfer from some Access data plans, not customised or tariff-based bundles.

Do I need a PIN to share data? No. You only need to enter your beneficiary's phone number and choose a data plan.

How much data can I transfer in a day? The cumulative amount you can transfer in a day is 5GB, and you must keep at least 100MB in your balance after each transfer.

Is data sharing free? You get ten free transfers per month. After that, a transfer fee applies for further transfers in the same calendar month, depending on the amount.

Can I ask someone to send me data? Yes. Dial *312*8# or *321*2#, select 3, and enter the donor's number. You can send up to five requests a day.
