On 8 October 2026, during a Prime Minister visit to Berlin, the UK and Germany agreed to open a new Industrial Tech Corridor. The stated aim is to help companies in both countries strike partnerships, and the announcement carries a €20 million pot for joint quantum research alongside new agreements on defence and economic growth. The government says the corridor is intended to drive investment, new jobs and adoption of cutting-edge technologies.

That is the pitch.

That is where the timing gets awkward. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has dissolved the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology, raising questions about who will now shape UK science policy. The evidence does not establish that the dissolution was connected to the corridor, and this article does not claim it was.

The wider industrial strategy machinery is still moving. The UK published its first long-term plan for the Digital and Technologies sector as part of the Modern Industrial Strategy, with a decade-long ambition to build strategic technological capabilities. In a September 2026 speech, Chancellor John Healey described advanced manufacturing as one of the government's eight Industrial Strategy growth sectors.

What remains unknown is who leads. The evidence does not state which department or minister now owns science and innovation policy after DSIT's dissolution, or whether that owner also holds the tech corridor.

The corridor is a test of whether industrial strategy survives departmental reshuffles. On the current record, the bilateral commitment is real and the domestic owner is not yet identified.
