A step-by-step guide to checking for and registering your Tax Identification Number (TIN) online, and what to do with your certificate afterwards.
What you need
- Your Bank Verification Number (BVN)
- Your date of birth
- Access to the TIN Verification Portal and the TIN Registration Portal
Step by step
- Go to the TIN Verification Portal and search for your TIN by entering your BVN and your date of birth.
- If your TIN is not found, move to the TIN Registration Portal to register for a TIN.
- Select the "Register for TIN" option and follow the instructions shown on the screen.
- Fill in the requested information and submit the form.
- Once your TIN is issued, print or download your TIN Certificate.
- Submit your TIN Certificate to the nearest Area Revenue Office for documentation.
Things to know
- Check before you register. The verification step comes first, so search with your BVN and date of birth before starting a fresh registration. If your TIN already exists, you do not need to register again.
- Keep your certificate safe. The certificate is the document you print or download once the TIN is issued, and you will need it for the final documentation step at the Area Revenue Office.
- The final step is in person. Submitting the certificate to the nearest Area Revenue Office is part of the process, so plan a visit after your online registration is complete.
- This guide covers the TIN process only. Motor vehicle registration, motorcycle registration, driver's licences and vehicle particulars renewal are separate processes with their own steps and documents.
