How to Delete a Page in Microsoft Word

You can delete a page in Word by selecting its content and pressing Delete, or by using the Go To command to select a whole page precisely. Blank pages at the end of a document are usually caused by Word's required end paragraph, and you can remove them by shrinking that paragraph to 1 point.

### Delete a page that contains text or graphics

  1. Click or tap anywhere in the page you want to delete.
  2. Press Ctrl+G on Windows, or Option+Command+G on a Mac.
  3. In the Enter page number box, type \page.
  4. Press Enter on your keyboard, then select Close.
  5. Check that a page of content is selected, then press Delete on your keyboard.

### Delete a blank page at the end of your document

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+8 on Windows, or Command+8 on a Mac, to show paragraph marks.
  2. Select the paragraph mark on the blank page.
  3. Select inside the Font size box, type 01, and press Enter. The paragraph now fits on the preceding page, removing the blank page.
  4. Press Ctrl+Shift+8 again, or Command+8 on a Mac, to hide the paragraph marks.

If that paragraph still does not fit on the preceding page, make the bottom margin smaller: go to Layout, then Margins, then Custom Margins, and set the bottom margin to something small, such as 0.3 inches.

### Delete a manual page break

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+8 on Windows, or Command+8 on a Mac, to show paragraph marks.
  2. Select the page break and delete it.

### Deal with a section break

  1. Double select the section break.
  2. On the Layout tab, select the Breaks drop-down and select Continuous.
  3. Select OK.

If the blank page is at the end of your document and there is a section break there, place your cursor directly before the section break and press Delete. To find section breaks more easily, switch to Draft on the View tab.

Things to know

  • In the middle of a document, deleting section breaks can cause formatting problems. In these cases, try changing the section break to one that does not generate a new page instead.
  • Next Page, Odd Page and Even Page section breaks might create a blank page in your document.
  • If the paragraph mark has a square bullet next to it, the paragraph might have the Page break before option turned on. To turn it off, right-click the empty paragraph, select Paragraph Settings on the Home tab, and on the Lines and Page Breaks tab of the dialog box, uncheck Page break before.
  • Word's end paragraph cannot be deleted, which is why a blank page at the end of a document needs the font-size or margin fix rather than a simple Delete press.

Common questions

Why can't I delete a blank page at the end of my document? It is usually caused by Word's required end paragraph being pushed onto a new page. Because the end paragraph cannot be deleted, make it very small (1 point) so it fits on the preceding page.

How do I select a whole page precisely? Press Ctrl+G on Windows or Option+Command+G on a Mac, type \page in the Enter page number box, press Enter, select Close, then press Delete.

How do I find a page break I cannot see? Press Ctrl+Shift+8 on Windows or Command+8 on a Mac to show paragraph marks, then select the page break and delete it.

Will deleting a section break affect my formatting? It can. In the middle of a document, deleting section breaks can cause formatting problems, so try changing the break to Continuous instead.

What if the paragraph still will not fit on the preceding page? Make the bottom margin smaller: go to Layout, then Margins, then Custom Margins, and set the bottom margin to something small, such as 0.3 inches.
