Close up of a cell phone with a keyboard, for a story on how to cancel auto-renewal on MTN in Nigeria.

You can stop MTN from renewing a data bundle automatically by sending a short SMS to 312, or by switching the auto-renewal option off in the myMTN NG app. Either way, you are only cancelling the next renewal, not the bundle you are already using.

What you need

  • Your MTN bundle code, if you are using the SMS method.
  • The myMTN NG app, if you prefer to manage it in the app.
  • Your MTN number to log in to the app.

Step by step

### Method 1: SMS

  1. Find the code for the bundle you subscribed to. Your original subscription message may contain the keyword or bundle code, and you can also check your active bundle in the myMTN NG app.
  2. Open your phone's messaging app and start a new text.
  3. Type NO followed by your bundle code, with no space between them. For example, if your bundle code is D2500, type NOD2500.
  4. Send the message to 312.

### Method 2: myMTN NG app

  1. Open the myMTN NG app.
  2. Log in with your MTN number.
  3. Go to Manage Subscription.
  4. Select your active data bundle.
  5. Find the Auto-Renewal option.
  6. Toggle auto-renewal off.

Things to know

  • Auto-renewal is separate from the data you have already bought. Cancelling it does not cancel your active bundle, and your remaining data stays available under its normal validity.
  • Once auto-renewal is off, the bundle should not buy itself again when it expires. You will need to subscribe manually when you want more data.
  • Cancelling auto-renewal is meant to prevent future renewals. If the bundle has already renewed and your airtime has already been deducted, cancelling afterwards does not normally reverse that completed purchase. If you believe MTN renewed your bundle incorrectly or without authorisation, contact MTN customer support with the transaction details.
  • The exact cancellation code depends on the bundle you subscribed to, so do not assume every MTN data plan uses the same code.
  • If you do not know your bundle code, you can check your subscription information in the myMTN NG app. MTN also lists SMS 2 to 323, \*323\*4# and \*310# among its data-balance checking options.
  • If you chose One-off Purchase when you bought the bundle, it will not renew after the expiry date even if you have enough airtime. You can opt in to auto-renewal later by sending R plus your bundle code to 312, for example R104 to 312 for a 120MB daily bundle.
  • If you are buying a bundle by SMS and the pop-up menu exits or times out before you choose an option, the bundle is activated as a One-off purchase. If you are buying by USSD, you cannot proceed until you select one-off, auto-renewal or buy for a friend.
  • MTN allows multiple data bundles on the same line, and each bundle has its own expiry date. When several bundles are active, the one with the least validity is used first.
  • The myMTN NG app changes as MTN releases updates, so the wording or position of the auto-renewal option may look slightly different on your device.

Common questions

Will I lose the data I have already bought if I cancel auto-renewal? No. Cancelling auto-renewal only tells MTN not to buy the bundle again when it expires. Your existing data remains active until it is exhausted or reaches its expiry date.

Can I cancel auto-renewal at any time? Yes. MTN says you can cancel auto-renewal on your bundle at any time by sending NO plus your bundle code to 312.

What happens after I cancel auto-renewal? The bundle should no longer renew itself when it expires. You then choose a new plan manually whenever you need one.

Will MTN refund me if the bundle already renewed? Cancelling auto-renewal is intended to prevent future renewals, so it does not normally reverse a purchase that has already gone through. If you think the renewal was incorrect or unauthorised, contact MTN customer support with the transaction details.

Can I turn auto-renewal back on later? Yes. You can opt in by sending R plus your bundle code to 312, or by logging in to the myMTN NG app, tapping Manage Subscription, selecting the active bundle and toggling the auto-renewal option on.
