Fulham's Late Control Problem Is the Real Story, Not Departures
Fulham's 1-0 win at Coventry came with just 0.55 xG, continuing a pattern of narrow margins that their own press conference flagged before the match.

Fulham won at Coventry City on 24 October 2026, Oscar Bobb scoring on 80 minutes. The scoreline says control; the numbers say something narrower. Fulham had 64 per cent possession and 12 shots to Coventry's 13, with 0.55 expected goals to Coventry's 0.50. Neither side created a big chance. This was a match decided by one moment, not by a side imposing itself.
That distinction matters because of what Fulham's own Head Coach said eight days earlier. Álvaro Arbeloa spoke to the press on 16 October 2026, ahead of Hull City's visit to Craven Cottage, and described a team that controls games and then concedes late. He referenced the defeat at Ipswich the previous weekend and a similar pattern against Man United, saying the team controlled those games before conceding. He called on players to keep believing and repeat what worked before they scored. Only fulhamfc.com reports this press conference; no other outlet has confirmed it yet.
The Pattern Arbeloa Named
At Coventry, Fulham did not concede late. Bobb's 80th-minute goal was the only one of the match. But the wider shape of the performance fits the concern Arbeloa described: a side with the ball, without the chances to show for it, and a result that hung on a single moment. Fulham's 0.55 xG here sits well below their average of 1.61 across earlier 2026/2027 matches in all competitions. Their open-play xG was 0.45, against an average of 1.47. One match is not a trend, but it is the same match state Arbeloa was describing: control without cutting edge, and a game that stays close enough for late events to decide it.
Arbeloa's comments about late goals at Ipswich and against Man United point to game management, and game management is often about who is on the pitch in the final twenty minutes. That is a testable on-pitch question. It does not require assuming anything about squad turnover.
What the club itself says is about availability and late-game control.
On availability, Arbeloa said Antonee Robinson is set to return to the squad, while Hugo Larsson is a doubt with a groin problem to be checked after training. All other players were described as fit and available. Larsson's status for the next fixture is an open question, and it is a doubt, not a diagnosis.
Fulham's league record under Arbeloa in 2026/2027 so far is 2W 2D 4L, 1.0 points per game over 8 games. Under Marco Silva in 2024/2025 it was 15W 9D 14L, 1.42 points per game over 38 games. Those are different seasons and different managers, and the comparison is context, not causation. But the gap is wide enough to make the question worth asking: is this a squad-quality issue, a game-management issue, or a small sample that will correct?
The results before and including Coventry, oldest first, read: Liverpool 0-0 Fulham; West Ham 2-3 Fulham in the EFL Cup; Fulham 1-1 Man United; Ipswich 2-1 Fulham; Fulham 1-0 Hull; Coventry 0-1 Fulham. The Coventry result is another one-goal margin.
What happens next will answer more than any framing can. Does the late-conceding pattern at Ipswich and against Man United continue, or was it corrected? Is Larsson fit after the groin check? And does Fulham's xG climb back toward the 1.61 average, or does the control-without-chances pattern persist? Those are the questions the next matches will settle.
