Alex Iwobi's goal gave Fulham a first league win of the season, but the gap between Silva's stability and Arbeloa's start remains the story.

It arrived after six league games without a win: two draws and four defeats, a return of 0.33 points per game. Marco Silva's final full league season at Fulham, 2024/25, produced 15 wins, nine draws and 14 defeats — 1.42 points per game across 38 matches. The contrast is the context in which this result should be read, and it is a contrast the club has spent the past year navigating.
What the Match Showed
Fulham dominated the ball against Hull's 5-4-1. Possession finished 76 per cent to 24. Fulham took 18 shots to Hull's five, six on target to Hull's none, and won 11 corners to Hull's two. Big chances were four to nil. Expected goals were 1.44 to 0.16. The attacking volume was there; the scoreline stayed at one.
Set against Fulham's earlier 2026/27 matches across all competitions, the shape of the performance shifts. Their average possession before this match was 52.8 per cent; here it was 76. Their average corners were 5.4; here they won 11. Their average xG was 1.96; here it was 1.44. Open-play xG was 1.09 against an earlier average of 1.78. More territory and more set-piece pressure, but fewer expected goals than their season norm.
That is one match, not a trend. The current league record is six games old, and six games is not a season. But it is the available picture, and it sits alongside a wider transition.
The Transition
Silva managed Fulham from 2021, overseeing more than 208 matches at 1.56 points per match, winning promotion in 2021/22 and establishing the club as a stable Premier League side. In November 2025, talkSPORT reported Fulham were weighing up his future amid tensions over his reluctance to sign a new deal, with the club one point above the relegation zone after losing six of their opening 11 matches. Silva had voiced frustration over the club's lack of spending and said he expected more from their summer transfer window.
Arbeloa took over, and his opening Premier League fixture was a five-goal defeat to Chelsea. After that game he said it was a new project and the club needed time, adding that he does not care about players' ages, only their quality. Fulham's summer business brought in Hugo Larsson, Shea Charles, David Affengruber, Gonzalo García, Jonah Kusi-Asare and César Palacios, while Saša Lukić, Issa Diop, Raul Jiménez, Jonathan Esenga, Harry Wilson and Adama Traoré departed. The sources do not quantify the overall turnover, and Silva's own frustration over spending suggests the squad picture was already in flux before he left.
What the Hull match cannot settle is whether the gap between Silva's 1.42 points per game and Arbeloa's 0.33 is a matter of transition or something deeper. The win is a first step. The next matches will show whether the volume against Hull — the possession, the corners, the 18 shots — can be converted into the kind of consistent return that defined the previous era at Craven Cottage.
