Fenerbahçe's 2-1 Derby Defeat Masks a Chance-Creation Chasm

Galatasaray's 23 shots to Fenerbahçe's 4 at RAMS Park show İsmail Kartal's side were contained, not narrowly beaten.

The scoreline flattered the visitors

Galatasaray beat Fenerbahçe 2-1 at RAMS Park on 26 October 2026, and the result will be filed away as another tight Istanbul derby. The numbers say otherwise. Expected goals read 2.27 to 0.31. Victor Osimhen scored twice in the first half, in the 29th and 44th minutes, with Barış Alper Yılmaz assisting the opener, and İrfan Can Kahveci's late overhead kick gave the scoreline a respectability the contest never earned.

That is the shape of the match: one side building a siege, the other surviving it. Fenerbahçe's goal arrived in the 62nd minute and came against the run of a game in which they managed four attempts across ninety minutes. A 2-1 defeat reads as a narrow loss. A 23-4 shot count reads as a structural gap in chance creation.

A season pattern, not a one-off

İsmail Kartal's side have now taken 16 points from nine league matches, at 1.78 per game. In Kartal's 2023/24 Süper Lig campaign, Fenerbahçe collected 31 wins, 6 draws and 1 defeat across 38 games, at 2.61 points per game. The comparison is not a like-for-like squad: since the summer, Fenerbahçe have signed N'Golo Kanté, Mattéo Guendouzi, Kojo Peprah Oppong, Nathan Aké, Romelu Lukaku and Vedat Muriqi, while Sofyan Amrabat, Dominik Livaković, Talisca, Sidiki Cherif, Youssef En-Nesyri and Fred have departed. That turnover is the context for a points return that has slipped well below the 2023/24 benchmark.

The derby numbers sit inside that wider picture. Fenerbahçe's 38 per cent possession here compares with a 53.6 per cent average across their earlier 2026/27 matches in all competitions. Their 181 accurate passes compare with an average of 408. Their 86 passes in the opposition half compare with an average of 192.8. They won 57 duels against an average of 39.8, which suggests effort and physical commitment rather than control. The one number that ran ahead of their season average was goals minus expected goals: 0.69 here against an average of 0.0, which is another way of saying Kahveci's finish was worth more than the chance itself.

What the next matches will answer

The open question is whether this was Galatasaray at their best against a Fenerbahçe side set up to contain, or whether it exposed something more durable. That is a run of extremes, and the derby added another: a low-volume attacking performance against the best opponent they have faced domestically.

Kartal was appointed for the 2026/27 season in June 2026, his fourth stint in charge, with the stated aim of restoring stability and reigniting a title pursuit. Nine matches in, his side sit six points behind Galatasaray, who moved to 22 points. That is not a title race decided in Week 9, and it would be wrong to describe this as a collapse when Kahveci scored and Fenerbahçe stayed within a goal until the end. But the chance-creation disparity is the part of the performance that travels beyond one derby. If Fenerbahçe cannot generate shots against the strongest side in the division, the gap to Galatasaray will be measured in more than points.

The next few fixtures will show whether the 23-4 count was an outlier produced by the occasion, or the clearest available picture of where these two squads currently stand.
