Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case in about a decade on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026 — a foreign woman living in Abuja who arrived from Uganda on Oct. 5, began feeling unwell Oct. 7, sought treatment at a private hospital Oct. 11 for malaria-like symptoms, and was tested for Ebola on Oct. 19, according to Odianosen Ehiakhamen, assistant director of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most of the 44 contacts traced so far are healthcare workers and the patient's husband, a Swiss national living with her in Abuja.

The origin of the infection is disputed. Uganda's health ministry said the woman had travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is battling the world's second-largest Ebola outbreak on record with more than 9,000 cases and more than 4,000 deaths. Uganda, which declared itself Ebola-free in July after recording 20 cases, has denied claims that Nigeria's first case originated there.

Africa CDC Director General Dr. Jean Kaseya invited African health ministers to an "extraordinary virtual meeting" on Oct. 28 to discuss the spread of Ebola, saying it would "strengthen our collective response."

Separately, at an Oct. 14 press conference in Kinshasa, Kaseya said international donors had disbursed $962 million directly to international organizations and NGOs for the DRC Ebola response, and that over $700 million remains to be traced. A follow-up meeting traced only about $220 million, leaving a gap of roughly $740 million, with only about 30% of concerned partners participating.

That gap is the number worth watching. A confirmed case in Africa's most populous country, with healthcare workers among the contacts, raises the stakes for regional containment. But the funding picture suggests the response is also a money-tracking problem: nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars in pledged aid is unaccounted for, and most of the partners who could explain it did not show up to the meeting convened to trace it.
