Başakşehir's 4-2-3-1 Meets Samsunspor's 3-5-2 at Fatih Terim Stadyumu

İstanbul Başakşehir host Samsunspor in the Süper Lig on Sunday with both starting XIs confirmed, and the shape sheet sets the terms of the afternoon. Başakşehir line up in a 4-2-3-1. Samsunspor arrive in a 3-5-2: three centre-backs, five across midfield, two forwards.

That is the central fact of the team news. The away side's five-man midfield is built to compress the middle of the pitch, and Başakşehir's response is a front four led by Andreas Skov Olsen. The Danish winger is the name the home crowd will look to when the ball needs carrying through traffic rather than around it.

Başakşehir sit 12th on 11 points. Samsunspor travel for round 10 as the visitors, and the pre-match odds made Başakşehir the clear favourite at a 52% winning probability. The table position and the price agree on one thing: this is a fixture the home side are expected to control, not one they can afford to trade chances in.

The Five Across Midfield and the Space It Takes Away

Samsunspor's 3-5-2 is not a passive shape. Five across midfield means the central lanes are crowded by design, and the two forwards give the block a way to hold the ball when it turns over. Against a 4-2-3-1, that creates a specific problem: the No 10 pocket, the zone where Başakşehir's attacking midfielder wants to receive, is exactly where the extra Samsunspor body is waiting.

Başakşehir's route through is therefore likely to run wide first. Skov Olsen on one flank and the full-backs pushing high is the natural counter to a midfield that has committed numbers centrally. The 4-2-3-1 gives Başakşehir two holders behind the attacking line, which matters against a 3-5-2 because Samsunspor's front two will try to pin those holders and force the centre-backs to play through the press.

The individual names in the Başakşehir XI carry the creative load. Skov Olsen is the primary wide threat. Davie Selke is the reference point through the middle, the player the wide deliveries and the second balls are aimed at. Bilal Bayazıt, Anto Sekongo and Celil Yüksel complete the group of players whose afternoons will decide whether the home side's possession turns into entries into the box or into sideways passes in front of the block.

What the Selections Say About the Plan

Starting Skov Olsen is the clearest statement in the Başakşehir teamsheet. Against a five-man midfield, the value of a winger who can beat a man one-v-one and force the block to slide is higher than usual. If Samsunspor's midfield five hold their central positions, the game becomes a question of whether Başakşehir can isolate Skov Olsen against a wing-back and whether Selke can win the first contact on the resulting crosses.

Samsunspor's selection follows the same logic from the other side. A 3-5-2 with two forwards means they are not simply parking. The shape gives them a platform to counter through the two strikers, and the five across midfield gives them the numbers to contest second balls in the middle third. If Başakşehir's holders are slow to turn, Samsunspor have the structure to break into the space behind the home full-backs.

The venue is Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadyumu, and the kick-off comes with the home side 12th and the away side making the trip for round 10. The pre-match numbers favour Başakşehir. The shape sheet says the game will be decided in the wide areas and in the pocket that Samsunspor's five-man midfield is designed to close.

Başakşehir's task is to make the 4-2-3-1 stretch the 3-5-2 horizontally before it can compress vertically. Samsunspor's task is to keep the game central, win the second balls, and let the two forwards run at a back four that will be exposed if the holders are bypassed. Both teams have picked the shape that says they know it.
