Three white-and-black soccer balls on field — Athletic Club 2-1 Real Sociedad: the derby won without the ball

A derby decided by structure, not territory

Athletic Club beat Real Sociedad 2-1 at San Mamés on 1 November 2026, and the scoreline is the least interesting thing about it. The hosts had 38 per cent of the ball. They conceded 62 per cent of it to a side that arrived having won four straight LaLiga matches and thrashed Lillestrom 6-0 in the Europa League. On the most basic reading of a football match — who had the ball, who spent the evening in the other half — this was Real Sociedad's game. It finished as Athletic's.

The reason is not mysterious, and it is not luck. Athletic's expected goals figure was 2.93, against an average of 1.84 across their earlier matches this season in all competitions. They took 13 shots to Real Sociedad's 14, but five big chances to two. They scored twice from three shots on target. Real Sociedad managed five on target and one goal. The visitors had more of the ball and more corners, eight to five, and did less with both.

The numbers behind the shape

The contrast with Athletic's season to date is stark. Across their earlier 2026/27 matches they averaged 63.75 per cent possession; here they had 38. They averaged 268.25 passes in the opposition half; here they managed 124. They averaged 33.5 touches in the opposition box; here they had 24. By every measure of territorial control, this was a fraction of their normal game.

And yet their expected goals was 2.93, well above their 1.84 average. That is the shape of the match in one line: less ball, fewer passes in the opposition half, fewer touches in the box, and better chances than they have created all season. Athletic did not dominate the derby. They organised it.

The finishing itself ran slightly cold against the chance volume — goals scored minus expected goals came out at -0.93, against an average of 0.0 across their earlier matches. Two goals from 2.93 expected is not a side converting everything it touches. It is a side creating enough that two goals is sufficient. That distinction matters for how the result should be read: this was not a smash-and-grab, and it was not a finishing masterclass either. It was a team generating high-value chances in a game it did not control.

What it interrupts

Real Sociedad had been unbeaten in their last five meetings with Athletic, including three wins across all competitions in 2025-26. They won both legs of the Copa del Rey semi-final and a 3-2 home league match; the corresponding fixture at San Mamés ended 1-1. That run is now over, and it ends in a match Real Sociedad largely controlled.

For Athletic, the result follows a 6-1 Copa del Rey win over Prat and a 4-0 league win against Getafe, after a four-game winless run in the league. The league record under Edin Terzic so far stands at three wins, three draws and three defeats from nine games, 1.33 points per game. The comparison with Ernesto Valverde's 2013/14 side — 20 wins, 10 draws, eight defeats, 1.84 points per game over 38 games — is a reminder of the standard this club measures itself against, and of how far a nine-game sample sits from a full season.

The question the next matches will answer

One match is one match. A 38 per cent possession figure and a 2.93 expected goals figure in the same game is a combination worth watching, not a trend to declare. The open question is whether this is a template — Athletic sitting deeper, ceding the ball, and attacking the spaces that leaves — or a derby-specific response to a Real Sociedad side in form and comfortable with the ball.

The lineups offer a clue without settling it. Athletic started in a 4-2-3-1 with Unai Simón in goal and Aymeric Laporte, Yuri Berchiche, Dani Vivian and Hugo Rincón among the starters. Real Sociedad set up in a 4-4-2 with Álex Remiro in goal. Two shapes that both invite the opponent to have the ball in certain areas, and one side that made the arrangement pay.

What the result does establish is that Athletic can win a Basque derby without dominating it, against a Real Sociedad side that had been beating everyone. Whether that becomes a habit, or remains a well-executed one-off, is what the coming weeks will show.
