A vehicle drove onto a youth soccer field at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon, killing two people and sending 11 others to hospitals, according to Wichita police. The crash happened around 3:25 p.m. local time at 2999 Greenwich Road, during a youth soccer game.
The dead are a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, both from McPherson, Kansas, and not related to each other. Police said 11 other people were taken to the hospital, 10 with traumatic injuries. None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening. The injured included five children ages 5 to 9 and five adults ages 28 to 68, plus a 61-year-old woman taken for non-traumatic treatment.
The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, was taken into custody at the scene and described by police as cooperative. Two juveniles were in the vehicle. Police said she had a child playing soccer at Stryker but not on the field where the crash occurred, and that she held a valid driver's license. Police called the event a mass casualty incident and said there was no further ongoing threat.
Police said it was not immediately clear whether the incident was intentional. That question remains open, and no motive has been stated.
The crash also stopped play on an adjacent field. The Kansas State High School Activities Association suspended the remaining games of its inaugural girls flag football state championship after the vehicle struck the crowd at the soccer game. The championship was in its first year.
What is known is narrow and specific: one vehicle, one Saturday afternoon, two deaths, 11 hospitalizations, an arrest, and a state tournament halted mid-event. What is not known is why the vehicle left the road and entered the fields, how it got there, or how fast it was traveling. Police have not released the driver's name, and no occupation or job title has been given.
The two juveniles who were in the vehicle, the condition of the injured beyond police's initial assessment, and whether the suspended championship games will be rescheduled are all unanswered.
