Xie Feng, China's ambassador to the United States, made the claim in comments reported by the South China Morning Post on 28 September 2026.

Our verdict

Unverified

We could not find enough public evidence to confirm or refute this claim. The two leaders clearly do have a personal relationship, but the public record does not show in-depth dialogue or prove that their rapport kept China–US relations on course at critical moments.

What we found

The claim comes from China's ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, who described the Xi–Trump rapport as the most valuable strategic asset in the relationship. We found records of real personal contact between the two leaders. A transcript of a state banquet in Beijing on 14 May 2026, published by Senate Democrats and also carried by Roll Call, shows them exchanging toasts. Pool reports from 24 September 2026, held by the American Presidency Project, show a state visit with bilateral meetings and a state dinner. The Chinese Embassy in Brunei also shared official Chinese Foreign Ministry releases about talks between the two on 26 September 2026. But these records show meetings, schedules and toast exchanges, not transcripts of substantive private discussion. A Brookings article on 30 September 2026 describes personal interactions at a summit but notes the limited policy focus. We found no independent documentation showing that their personal relationship directly steadied the relationship during specific critical moments. The ambassador's statement repeats the claim without providing that detail, so we cannot confirm or refute it.

The evidence

  • Background

The South China Morning Post reports that Ambassador Xie Feng publicly described the personal rapport and in-depth dialogue between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump as the most valuable strategic asset in China–US relations, saying it helped keep ties stable at critical moments. This is where the claim comes from, but it is his assertion rather than independent proof. [1]

  • Supports the claim

A transcript of a state banquet in Beijing on 14 May 2026 records direct verbal exchanges between the two presidents, confirming face-to-face contact at the highest level. [2]

  • Supports the claim

A second transcript of the same Beijing state banquet on 14 May 2026 confirms the two leaders exchanged toasts, showing a direct personal interaction. [3]

  • Background

The Chinese Embassy in Brunei shared links to official Chinese Foreign Ministry full-text releases about talks between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump on 26 September 2026, showing formal diplomatic engagement. [4]

  • Supports the claim

A Brookings article on 30 September 2026 describes a state visit between Trump and Xi, noting their personal interactions but also the limited policy focus, which points to a personal connection without showing deep or consequential dialogue. [5]

  • Supports the claim

Pool reports from 24 September 2026 document a scheduled state visit with bilateral meetings, an expanded bilateral meeting and a state dinner, confirming the two leaders met in formal settings. [6]

What we could not confirm

  • Whether the two leaders held private, in-depth discussions beyond public toast exchanges and set-piece meetings.
  • Whether their personal rapport directly influenced China–US relations during specific critical moments, and how.
  • Whether earlier periods of the Trump presidency involved similar personal diplomacy, since the records we found cover 2026 only.

How we checked

We looked at public records of meetings and talks between the two leaders, including transcripts of a state banquet, official Chinese government releases, US pool reports and independent commentary on a 2026 summit. We found evidence of personal contact but no transcripts or independent analysis showing in-depth dialogue or a direct effect on the relationship at critical moments. We reviewed 6 relevant sources.
