“On average, each skilled worker contributes hundreds of thousands of pounds to public finances over their lifetime.” — Marley Morris. Our verdict: Unverified.

Marley Morris made the claim in an interview reported by Yahoo News, in a piece about a migrant crackdown described as "Reform-lite".
Our verdict
Unverified
We could not find enough public evidence to confirm or refute the claim that each skilled worker contributes hundreds of thousands of pounds to public finances over their lifetime. The best available study looks only at a narrow group of skilled workers and does not give a figure for skilled workers as a whole.
Know something that settles it? Send us evidenceWhat we found
Marley Morris did make this claim. A news report quotes him saying that estimates suggest each skilled worker contributes hundreds of thousands of pounds to public finances over their lifetime. So the attribution is not in doubt.
The problem is the number itself. The Migration Advisory Committee published a report in December 2025 on the fiscal impact of immigration. It gives lifetime estimates, but only for people who came to the UK on a Skilled Worker visa in 2022/23. It does not cover skilled workers as a whole, and the excerpt we saw does not confirm the "hundreds of thousands of pounds" figure.
Other material we looked at did not help. A Home Office consultation on earned settlement sets out migration figures and political context but no lifetime contribution figure for skilled workers. Nothing we found contradicts the claim, but nothing reliable establishes it either. We have therefore rated it unverifiable. If you have evidence that bears on this, please send it to us.
The evidence
1 of 3 sources support the claim; none contradict it.
- Background
A news report quotes Marley Morris saying that estimates suggest each skilled worker contributes hundreds of thousands of pounds to public finances over their lifetime. This confirms he made the claim, but the report does not set out the underlying estimate. [1]
- Supports the claim
The Migration Advisory Committee's December 2025 report gives lifetime fiscal estimates, but only for migrants who arrived on the Skilled Worker visa in 2022/23. It does not cover skilled workers generally, and the excerpt does not confirm the figure claimed. [2]
- Background
The Home Office consultation on earned settlement discusses net migration of 2.6 million between 2021 and 2024 and the wider political context, but gives no lifetime contribution figure for skilled workers. [3]
What we could not confirm
- Whether any study estimates an average lifetime contribution for all skilled workers, rather than only those arriving on the Skilled Worker visa in 2022/23.
- Whether the original interview with Marley Morris set out a source or figure behind the claim.
- Whether the modelling assumptions in the Migration Advisory Committee report would support a figure of hundreds of thousands of pounds per skilled worker.
How we checked
We looked at the news report carrying the claim, the Migration Advisory Committee's December 2025 report on the fiscal impact of immigration, and a Home Office consultation on earned settlement. We searched these for any figure covering skilled workers as a whole over their lifetime. We reviewed 3 relevant sources.
