“The Trump administration is split over Benjamin Netanyahu, with people like JD Vance coming out against his role in pushing the US to strike Iran.” — Mairav Zonszein. Our verdict: Unverified.

Mairav Zonszein, senior analyst on Israel at the International Crisis Group, said this in an Al Jazeera article published on 13 October 2026.
Our verdict
Unverified
Unverified. JD Vance has publicly criticised Israeli ministers over the Iran war, but we found no reporting that shows other administration figures on the other side, so a split inside the administration is not established.

Mairav Zonszein, an analyst at the International Crisis Group, told Al Jazeera on 13 October 2026 that Donald Trump's caution about Benjamin Netanyahu was "probably a combination of the Iran war and the split in the Trump administration with people like [Vice President JD] Vance", who she said had come out against Netanyahu's role in pushing the US to strike Iran.
Part of this is on the record. After the 8 April ceasefire, Netanyahu pushed to continue the campaign while Trump moved to wind the war down, the Associated Press reported on 18 June 2026. At a White House briefing that day Vance accused unnamed members of Netanyahu's cabinet of ingratitude and said Israel's problem was "not Donald J. Trump".
But the disagreement that report describes is between Washington and the Israeli government, not inside the administration. Vance aimed his remarks at Israeli ministers, not at Netanyahu by name, and we found no reporting of senior officials taking the opposite side. Whether the administration is split, as she says, rests on her reading, which we cannot confirm or refute.
The evidence
2 sources, all background: none settles the claim either way.
- Background
Zonszein said Trump's hedging reflected the Iran war and "the split in the Trump administration with people like" Vance, who she said had come out against Netanyahu's role in pushing for a US strike. [1]
- Background
Netanyahu pushed to continue the Iran campaign after the April ceasefire while Trump wound it down. Vance criticised unnamed Israeli cabinet members. The report describes a US-Israel rift, not a split inside the administration. [2]
What we could not confirm
- Whether any senior administration figure has taken Netanyahu's side against Vance in public.
- Whether Vance has criticised Netanyahu's role in the decision to strike Iran, rather than Israeli ministers' later conduct.
