Donald Trump made the claim in public remarks reported on 13 October 2026, including by Al Jazeera, while discussing the energy ceasefire and new Russian strikes on Ukraine.

Our verdict

Unverified

We could not confirm or refute the claim that at least 32,000 people were killed in the Russia-Ukraine war in October 2026. News reports agree that Donald Trump said this, but no public casualty figures for October 2026 exist to back the number up.

What we found

Several news outlets, including Al Jazeera, Brussels Signal, Firstpost, The Statesman, Anadolu Agency and Yeni Şafak, all reported on 13 October 2026 that Donald Trump said at least 32,000 people had been killed in the Russia-Ukraine war during October 2026. So there is little doubt that he made the claim.

The problem is the number itself. We could not find any public casualty figures for October 2026. The closest data we found come from Bloomberg, which reported a NATO official's estimate of about 28,000 Russian deaths and 5,000 Ukrainian casualties — roughly 33,000 in total — but that covers the month before 11 October 2026, not October itself. Other figures we came across covered August or September 2026, or were not about casualties at all.

Because the statement was clearly made but the figure cannot be checked against any public record for October 2026, our verdict is unverifiable. We could not find enough public evidence to confirm or refute the claim. If you have evidence that bears on it, please send it to us.

Casualty estimates in the Russia-Ukraine war

Donald Trump's claim of 32,000 casualties in October 2026 is comparable to the 33,000 casualties estimated by a NATO official for the month prior.
