Our verdict

Unverified

Unverified. Andy Burnham said officials told him Russia interfered in the 2016 referendum, but he gave no evidence and the government has published no assessment. The last public finding, in 2020, was that no one had looked.

What we found

In an interview on The Rest Is Politics podcast, released on 11 October 2026, Andy Burnham said that when he arrived in Downing Street he asked whether Russia had interfered in the 2016 referendum and got "the clear answer that yes, there was", Al Jazeera reported. He did not say who gave that answer or what it rested on, and he gave no details.

As prime minister, Burnham speaks for the government, so the question is not whether the government has said so but whether Russia did interfere. On that the public record is thin. In July 2020 Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee found that no assessment of Russian interference in the referendum had been made, and one member said the government had "actively avoided" looking. The government replied that it had seen no evidence of successful interference and that a retrospective assessment was not necessary.

No assessment has been published since. The answer Burnham describes may exist, but readers cannot see it, so we cannot confirm or refute the claim.
