What the Vatican has not said about Pope Leo XIV's cancer diagnosis

Pope Leo XIV, 71, had the lower lobe of his right lung removed on Oct. 13 at Rome's Gemelli hospital, after preoperative tests raised suspicion of cancer and an intraoperative histological examination confirmed lung adenocarcinoma.
The sequence matters.
The surgery itself lasted about 90 minutes; the pope was in the operating room for roughly three hours. The Vatican said the procedure was successful with no complications. Dr. Stefano Margaritora, chief thoracic surgeon at Gemelli, led a minimally invasive, camera-guided team that included Dr. Luigi Carbone.
Leo woke as expected, returned to his room on the 10th floor, and was expected to remain at Gemelli for about a week of recovery. The next day, the Vatican said he had a restful night.
It did not state whether further treatment will follow. Asked about that, a spokesman said the statement spoke for itself.
Adenocarcinoma is a type of non-small cell lung cancer that tends to grow more slowly than other kinds. The pope is not known to have ever been a smoker. The information released so far appears to indicate early-stage disease, which is typically treated with surgery — but the Vatican has not confirmed staging, and it has not described a treatment plan.
A cancer diagnosis for a sitting pope raises immediate questions about church governance, the pope's public schedule, and how much medical detail the Vatican chooses to release. Lung adenocarcinoma survival varies widely by stage and overall health. Without staging, the practical stakes for Leo's workload and travel remain unresolved.
What is established: the diagnosis, the lobe removal, the stated success, the recovery timeline. What is unknown: the stage, the follow-up, and how long the pope's duties will be curtailed.
