Venezia and Napoli walk off at the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo level at 0-0, and the scoreline is the least interesting thing about it. Napoli have had 64% of the ball, taken nine shots to Venezia's four, and won five corners to none. They have also produced 0.13 expected goals from open play. Venezia's back three has turned the game into a possession exercise with no exit.
The block that swallowed the middle
Venezia set up in a 3-5-2: three centre-backs, five across midfield, two forwards. Against Napoli's 3-4-2-1, that extra body in the middle of the park is the whole story. The five-man midfield line sits in front of the back three and closes the half-spaces where Napoli's two attacking midfielders want to receive. Napoli's centre-backs can pass — Amir Rrahmani completed 96.6% of his passes across 72 touches, Benoît Badiashile 88.1% across 70 — but those passes are going sideways. Napoli's 344 accurate passes include 180 in Venezia's half, and still the visitors managed only 14 touches in the box and zero big chances.
Dispossessed against Venezia's 3-5-2
Giovane-Nascimento lost the ball 2 times against the deep block.
Stanislav Lobotka is the clearest casualty. Forty touches, 87.2% passing, a 6.41 rating — the lowest of Napoli's midfield starters. He is not being dispossessed; he is being starved. Sam Beukema (54 touches, 91.7%, 6.7) and Badiashile have the ball, but the pass that would break the block is not on. Giovanni Di Lorenzo has been dragged into the congestion too: 45 touches, 84.2% passing, one dispossession, a 6.05 rating. Giovane Nascimento has lost the ball twice in 31 touches and rated 6.15. Napoli's problem is not carelessness. It is that Venezia's shape has removed the space where the next pass should go.
Venezia's half without the ball
Venezia have 36% possession and one shot on target, but they are not passive. They have won 23 duels to Napoli's 17, and their two forwards are the out-ball whenever the block turns over possession. Ridgeciano Haps has been the outlet on the left. The home side's 0.17 xG is modest, but it is not nothing — and it is more open-play xG than Napoli have managed (0.17 to 0.13).
Shots by player
Akor Adams and Scott McTominay had the most shots, 3 each.

Match stats at half-time
Napoli created the better chances: 0.50 xG to 0.17.
The set-piece split is where Napoli's half really curdles. Venezia have conceded five corners and defended all five. Napoli's 0.50 total xG is 0.37 from set plays and 0.13 from open play. Strip out the dead balls and the league's away favourites have created almost nothing from the run of play. Scott McTominay has 0.13 xG, Di Lorenzo 0.08, Giovane 0.04. No Napoli player has a big chance.
What the second half needs
Napoli do not need more possession. They need a different route through the middle. Venezia's 3-5-2 will keep five players in the central lane as long as Napoli keep trying to play through it. The visitors' width — Di Lorenzo on one side, Haps' opposite number on the other — is where the block can be stretched, and Napoli have the passing quality to switch play if they choose to. Venezia, for their part, will take this half exactly as it is. A 0-0 at the break against Napoli, with the away side's open-play xG at 0.13, is the shape working.
