A historic courtroom with wooden benches, desks with lamps, and marble busts — Sean Gardner: three 30-year terms that add up to life at 39

Sean Gardner will serve 90 years in federal prison. He is 39.

U.S. District Judge Kristi Johnson imposed the maximum sentence on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, ordering 30 years for each of three federal child pornography production charges to which Gardner pleaded guilty. The arithmetic is the story: three counts, three statutory ceilings, stacked consecutively. For a man of Gardner's age, the sentence likely amounts to life in prison.

Gardner admitted placing a hidden camera in a bathroom at a gymnastics studio in Purvis, Mississippi, between December 2017 and April 2018, recording his students. Investigators said the videos showed close-up images of at least 10 minors naked or undressing. The recordings were recovered from his computers years later, not in 2018. The FBI arrested Gardner the previous summer.

The case has renewed scrutiny of whether U.S. gymnastics authorities have done enough to protect athletes from abuse by coaches who hold influence over them. Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics team doctor, was found guilty of sexually assaulting at least 265 young women and girls, a case that prompted years of institutional reckoning.

What this sentencing illustrates is narrower and more concrete: federal child pornography production charges carry 30-year maximums, and a judge who runs them consecutively can convert a term of years into what functions as a life sentence.

Gardner's victims were recorded in a bathroom at a studio where he coached. The videos sat on his computers for years.
