Rubin: fraud claims could cast doubt on 2026 results

Robert Rubin warns fraud claims could be used to question 2026 results, as the Brennan Center documents a federal drive to reshape election rules.

Robert Rubin, the U.S. Treasury Secretary from 1995 to 1999, wrote a New York Times op-ed this week warning that unfounded talk of fraud in the coming election lays the groundwork for questioning results — and that the instability that follows would damage the U.S. economy. Only one outlet, People's World, has reported the op-ed; no other outlet has confirmed it yet.

Rubin's intervention matters less for what it reveals about his politics than for where it sits in the institutional map. The warning about a contested election is no longer coming only from grassroots denial or foreign interference. It is now coming from a former Treasury secretary, writing in the paper of record, framing the risk as economic as well as democratic.

The Brennan Center, in a separate research report, describes a concerted federal drive to undermine American elections. It dates the start to the pardons of January 6 defendants who sought to overturn the 2020 results, and lists attacks on democratic institutions, the repeal and withdrawal of voter protections, and attempts to rewrite election rules. The center calls the moves unprecedented and, in some cases, illegal, and says the effort will likely gather momentum as the 2026 midterms approach.

That is the shift worth naming. The threat is not only a crowd outside a counting center. It is the executive branch itself, using the tools it controls — pardons, enforcement priorities, rulemaking — to shape how votes are cast and counted.

The Brennan Center's report is a research assessment, not a court finding. No independent confirmation has established that a coup is underway.
