Roma vs Genoa: Tactical Questions at the Olimpico Before a Ball Is Kicked

Roma host Genoa at Stadio Olimpico in Serie A round 7, and both managers have confirmed starting XIs that lean on the same structure: three centre-backs, four midfielders, two attacking midfielders and a lone striker.

The symmetry is the story. Neither side has blinked on shape, which means the match will be decided by which set of players handles the demands of the system better — the wide centre-backs who must defend the channels, the wing-backs who must cover the full length of the pitch, and the two No. 10s who must find space in a crowded middle third.

Ndicka Holds the Roma Line

Evan Ndicka is the anchor of Roma's back three. In this setup the central defender has to hold the line while the outside centre-backs step into midfield or track runners into the channels. Ndicka's job is to win the first ball, cover the space behind the wing-backs, and start attacks without overcommitting.

Devyne Rensch is the other Roma name that shapes how the home side will play. The wing-back role is the most physically demanding on the pitch, and Rensch's ability to time his forward runs without leaving the back three exposed will determine how aggressively Roma can press Genoa's build-up.

Roma's two attacking midfielders will look to receive between Genoa's midfield and defensive lines. Against a back three, those pockets are narrow. The wing-backs have to provide the width, which means Roma's central midfielders will be asked to shuttle laterally to avoid being outnumbered in transition.

Genoa Trust Marcandalli and Puczka

Genoa arrive with the same shape, turning the match into a mirror. When both teams line up identically, the game often becomes a contest of who can break the other's first line of pressure. Genoa's back three will look to play out from the back, but Roma's two attacking midfielders can screen the central passing lanes if they stay disciplined.

Alessandro Marcandalli and David Puczka are the Genoa defenders to track. The outside centre-backs in a back three have to be comfortable defending wide areas when the wing-backs are caught upfield. Marcandalli and Puczka will be tested by Roma's wide overloads, and their ability to win duels one-on-one will decide whether Genoa can keep their shape intact.

Emanuele Lulli is the third Genoa name in the confirmed XI. His role will likely involve linking midfield to attack, finding the two No. 10s between Roma's lines, and helping Genoa sustain possession when Roma press.

Where the Match Will Be Decided

With both teams in the same shape, the match is set up to be decided in the half-spaces. Roma's attacking midfielders will try to receive between Genoa's centre-backs and wing-backs. Genoa's attacking midfielders will attempt the same against Roma's back three. The team that wins those duels will control the tempo.

Both managers have prioritised defensive solidity and wing-back energy over a more conventional back four. That choice often produces a cagey opening, with both sides probing for the first mistake rather than committing numbers forward early.

Roma's selections — Ndicka and Rensch — suggest the home side will try to build from the back and use the wing-backs to stretch Genoa. Genoa's selections — Marcandalli, Puczka and Lulli — suggest the visitors will sit compact, absorb pressure, and look to counter through the half-spaces.

Kick-off is set for 17 October 2026 at Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Both teams have confirmed their lineups, and the tactical symmetry is the story: two back threes, two midfields built to screen, and a battle in the half-spaces that will decide who leaves the Olimpico with the points.
