No J5 chief, no successor: who is planning Trump's Iran options?

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth fired Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia as head of strategy, plans and policy on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a post known as the J5, according to a defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity. No reason was given. No replacement was named.

Sylvia is the second general ousted from the J5 post under Hegseth. His predecessor, Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, was forced to retire last October. The Joint Staff spokesperson thanked Sylvia for 32 years of service. ABC News reported that Sylvia has retired.

The J5 director and staff generate and coordinate military plans. Removing the top planner without a named successor leaves the office without a confirmed leader while the White House weighs military action against Iran.

U.S. officials have told several Middle East countries and regional allies to be prepared for potential renewed military action against Iran after the Nov. 3 midterm elections, and for possible Iranian retaliation, according to two diplomats briefed on the matter who spoke anonymously. President Donald Trump has not made a final decision on new strikes, though he has repeatedly said he is weighing military action after the elections. He said over the weekend he was deciding whether to "make a deal" with Iran or "finish it off." He had earlier promised the U.S. would not attack Iran before the midterms and touted "productive conversations" with Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Wednesday that Tehran "continues to give diplomacy a chance to succeed."

The timing is the story. Two consecutive J5 directors have now been removed under Hegseth, and the second dismissal lands while strike options are under active consideration and regional allies are being told to prepare for retaliation. The J5 is where military plans are generated and coordinated — the office that turns political direction into options for the president. A vacancy at the top of that office, with no successor named, raises questions about continuity and about who is shaping the choices presented to Trump.

Trump has not announced a final decision on renewed strikes.
