Lyon have confirmed a 4-3-3 for Sunday's Ligue 1 meeting with Angers at Groupama Stadium, with Abner and Branco Van Den Boomen both in the starting XI. Angers set up in a 5-3-2, five across the back and two up top.

The shape is the story. Lyon's front three will run into a back five that is designed to be hard to play through, and the home side's width has to come from somewhere. Abner on the left is the obvious outlet. Van Den Boomen in midfield is the passer who has to find him before Angers' three screening midfielders shuffle across.

Lyon's 4-3-3 and the Left-Side Question

Lyon's 4-3-3 gives them three midfielders against Angers' three, so the middle of the pitch is a straight contest. The advantage Lyon hold is out wide, where a front three can pin a back five if the full-backs push high. Abner is the player asked to make that work on the left. If he stays deep, Lyon's front three is isolated against five defenders. If he goes, Angers' right-sided centre-back has a decision to make and the space behind opens.

Van Den Boomen's role is to make that decision happen. He is the midfielder who can switch the point of attack and force the back five to travel. Against a 5-3-2, the ball has to move faster than the block. Lyon's 4-3-3 gives them the passing angles to do it, but only if the midfield three keeps the ball moving rather than settling into sideways possession.

Anthony Lopes starts in goal. His distribution under pressure matters against a side that will sit deep and look to spring the two strikers on the counter.

Angers' 5-3-2: Five Back, Two Up Top

Angers' 5-3-2 is a five-man defence with three midfielders screening in front and two strikers waiting for the out-ball. The mechanics are simple: the back five narrows the space between the full-backs and centre-backs, the midfield three blocks the central lanes, and the front two hold the ball up or run the channels when Lyon commit bodies forward.

That shape asks Lyon to solve a problem they will face repeatedly in Ligue 1: how to break a low block without leaving themselves open. Angers do not need much of the ball to make the shape work. They need Lyon to get frustrated, push the full-backs higher, and leave the two strikers in a foot race.

Carlens Arcus and Amine Sbaï are the names to watch in that structure. Arcus has to manage the right side of the back five against Abner's overlaps. Sbaï is part of the forward pair tasked with making Lyon's centre-backs defend in transition. If Angers' front two can hold the ball, the away side can turn a defensive setup into a genuine away performance.

What the Selections Say

Lyon have picked a team to dominate the ball. A 4-3-3 with Van Den Boomen in midfield and Abner at left-back is an attacking selection, not a cautious one. The risk is the space behind Abner when Angers' front two break. The reward is the chance to pin a back five and create chances from wide areas.

Angers have picked a team to survive the first hour and take whatever comes late. A 5-3-2 with two strikers is not a pure park-the-bus setup. It is a shape that says: keep it tight, stay in the game, and back the front two to produce one moment.

Kick-off is at 16:15 UTC. Lyon's 4-3-3 against Angers' 5-3-2 is the tactical frame for the afternoon. The team that solves the other's shape first wins the game.
