IWF hands Moscow 2030 World Championships, a first for Russia since 2022
The IWF awarded Moscow the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships, a 2032 Olympic qualifier and Russia's first Olympic-sport world championship since 2022.
The International Weightlifting Federation awarded Moscow the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026, making it the first Olympic sport federation to hand Russia a flagship world championship since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
The decision was adopted at an IWF Executive Board meeting reported as held in Ningbo, China. The 2030 event will double as a qualifying competition for the 2032 Olympic Games. The same meeting awarded the 2029 senior World Championships to Ahmedabad, India — India's first senior weightlifting worlds — the 2028 World Youth Championships to Pristina, Kosovo, and the 2028 World Junior Championships to Caracas, Venezuela.
IWF General Secretary Jose Quinones said all bids received were excellent. The federation did not specifically explain why it chose Russia, and exact dates for the 2030 championships have not been announced.
The award follows the IWF's own re-engagement with Russia. About four months before Sunday's decision, the federation restored the rights of Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under national flags and anthems. In July, the International Olympic Committee provisionally lifted its suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee.
No world championships in an Olympic sport, summer or winter, have been held in Russia since the start of the war against Ukraine. The 2025 world swimming championships, initially slated for Kazan, were moved to Singapore.
That record is what makes Sunday's decision a milestone rather than a calendar entry. At least one Olympic federation is now willing to bring a flagship event back to Russia while the war continues. The 2030 championships also give Moscow a global stage tied directly to 2032 Olympic qualification, and potentially open the way for Russian athletes to compete for their country at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Whether other Olympic federations follow or resist is an open question. The IWF has set a precedent; it has not settled the broader terms of how Olympic sport re-engages Russia.
