Inter's Control Without the Goal

Inter and Fiorentina go into the half-time break level at 0-0 at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, but the first half belonged almost entirely to the hosts. Inter registered 9 shots to Fiorentina's 3, put 3 on target to Fiorentina's none, and built a 0.59 to 0.09 expected-goals advantage. The scoreline is the only thing keeping this contest level.

Inter's 3-5-2 has been the story of the half. Three centre-backs, five across midfield, two forwards — the shape has allowed Inter to flood central areas and pin Fiorentina's 4-3-3 deep. The hosts have spent the half camped in Fiorentina's territory, completing 139 passes in the opposition half to Fiorentina's 59, and generating 19 touches in the box to Fiorentina's 7. Possession sits at 54-46, but the territorial and chance-creation gap is far wider than that number suggests.

Dispossessed against Inter's 3-5-2

Mateo-Pellegrino lost the ball 1 time against the deep block.

Fiorentina's Midfield Suffocated

Against Inter's 3-5-2, Fiorentina's midfielders have struggled to find any room between the lines. Mateo-Pellegrino has been the most glaring casualty: 16 touches, a 40% pass accuracy, and one dispossession, with a first-half rating of 5.99. Nicolò-Fagioli has seen more of the ball — 37 touches — and kept it well at 97.1% passing, but his rating of 5.86 reflects how little of that possession has been progressive or dangerous. Marco-Brescianini, with 22 touches and 73.3% passing, has also been unable to break Inter's compact five across midfield.

Álex-Jiménez has been Fiorentina's most involved player with 43 touches and an 80.8% pass accuracy, earning a 6.61 rating, but even his work has come largely in front of Inter's block rather than through it. Franco-Mastantuono (33 touches, 77.8% passing) and Cher-Ndour (31 touches, 77.3% passing) have been similarly contained. Six Fiorentina players have been squeezed out of the game by Inter's shape, and the visitors have yet to register a single shot on target as a result.

What Inter Are Missing

For all their control, Inter have not created a single big chance. Their 0.59 xG is split between 0.42 from open play and 0.17 from set plays, and their 9 shots have produced just 3 on target. Francesco Pio Esposito has carried the biggest threat with 0.15 xG, while Carlos Augusto (0.12 xG), Andy Diouf (0.09 xG), and Nicolò Barella (0.06 xG) have all contributed without finding the breakthrough. Hakan Çalhanoglu has been central to the build-up but has not yet registered a shot of note.

Shots by player

Francesco Pio Esposito and Marcus Thuram had the most shots, 2 each.

Inter have won 17 duels to Fiorentina's 21, a rare category where the visitors lead, and the foul count is nearly even at 6-5. No yellow cards have been shown. The hosts have three corners to Fiorentina's none, underlining their set-piece dominance without the reward.

The pattern is clear: Inter's 3-5-2 has won the tactical battle, Fiorentina's 4-3-3 has no answer in tight areas, and the only thing missing is a goal. Fiorentina will need to find a way to get Pellegrino, Fagioli, and Brescianini on the ball in dangerous areas — or risk watching Inter's control finally tell after the break.
