Gaza's ceasefire is holding, but 1,493 deaths have been recorded since it began
A ceasefire has been in effect since October 2025, but the Gaza Ministry of Health reports 74,544 dead and the UN verified 1,076 conflict deaths post-pause.
The Gaza Ministry of Health announced on Sunday that four more people died in the previous 24 hours, bringing its reported total since October 2023 to 74,544 dead and 175,692 injured.
The deaths are not the residue of a war that stopped. A ceasefire agreement has been in effect since 10 October 2025. The Gaza Ministry of Health and Palestinian medical sources describe daily field violations — artillery shelling and direct gunfire toward homes and gatherings — continuing under it.
The independent counts make the pattern harder to dismiss as isolated incidents. The UN Human Rights Office verified 1,076 conflict-related deaths between the ceasefire announcement on 10 October 2025 and the end of July 2026, including 331 near the 'Yellow Line.' The Gaza Ministry of Health reported 57 Palestinians killed and 319 injured between 29 September and 12 October 2026, bringing its post-ceasefire total to 1,493 fatalities and 5,299 injuries.
Post-ceasefire fatalities in Gaza
The number of reported fatalities has increased since the ceasefire began.
Figures in people
The two post-ceasefire figures differ — 1,076 verified by the UN through July, 1,493 reported by the ministry through mid-October — because they cover different periods and use different verification methods. Both point the same direction.
Displacement pressure has continued alongside the casualties. On 10 October 2026, Israeli authorities issued four evacuation orders and two shelter-in-place orders affecting humanitarian sites across three governorates. On 11 October, Israeli forces reportedly moved the 'Yellow Line' markers westward near Ash Shuja'iyyeh junction in Gaza City, raising concerns about further displacement in an area hosting displaced people.
Aid is still arriving. Two new Emirati convoys — 10 trucks carrying roughly 260 tons of food supplies — entered this week as part of Operation 'Gallant Knight 3,' bringing total relief trucks since the operation began to 14,594 and total aid load to over 138,290 tons.
Palestinians in Gaza are watching Knesset elections scheduled for next Tuesday with caution. Political analysts warn that partisan competition could translate into new field escalation.
The gap between the ceasefire declaration and the daily toll is the story. A ceasefire that produces more than a thousand verified deaths in its first nine months is not a pause in the war so much as a change in how the war is counted.
