FC Dallas and Seattle Sounders FC have confirmed their starting XIs for Wednesday night's Major League Soccer fixture at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Dallas sits fourth in the Western Conference on 13-7-8; Seattle arrives eighth on 11-9-8. Kick-off is 7:30 p.m. CST.
The selections settle the shape question before a ball is kicked. Dallas line up in a 4-4-2. Seattle set up in a 4-2-3-1.
Dallas Pair Two Up Top
Head coach Nico Estévez's 4-4-2 puts two forwards ahead of a four-man midfield, with Bernard Kamungo among the names tasked with turning Dallas's territorial control into entries into the Seattle box. The shape asks the wide midfielders to shuttle between the touchline and the half-space, and it asks the front two to hold the ball long enough for the second line to arrive.
The trade-off is familiar. Against a 4-2-3-1, Dallas's central midfield pair can be outnumbered in the middle third when Seattle's attacking midfielder drops between the lines. Dallas's route around that is width: get the ball wide early, then attack the back post before Seattle's double pivot can slide across.
Seattle's 4-2-3-1 and the Rusnák Question
Seattle's 4-2-3-1 gives Brian Schmetzer two holding midfielders in front of the back four and a three-man band beneath a lone striker. Albert Rusnák is the reference point in that attacking line, and Cristian Roldan gives Seattle a runner who can arrive late in the box from the right.
The structure is built to do two things at once: keep four defenders plus two pivots behind the ball, and let the three behind the striker rotate to find the spare man against Dallas's two-man midfield. If Seattle's No. 10 finds pockets between Dallas's lines, Dallas's back four will have to decide whether to step or hold — and either choice opens space somewhere else.
What the Selections Imply
Dallas's 4-4-2 is a commitment to two banks of four and quick vertical transitions rather than patient central build-up. Seattle's 4-2-3-1 is a commitment to controlling the middle and letting the front four combine. The matchup tilts on one question: can Dallas's midfield pair avoid being played around, and can Seattle's front four turn central superiority into touches inside the Dallas box?
Andrew Thomas and Daniel are among the players whose nights will be measured in how cleanly they handle the spaces their shapes create. For Dallas, the 4-4-2 only works if the front two defend the first pass and the wide midfielders track Seattle's full-backs. For Seattle, the 4-2-3-1 only works if the double pivot screens the space in front of the centre-backs when Dallas go long.
Both teams have named their teams. The shapes are set. The rest is decided between the lines at Toyota Stadium.
