Maximilian Beier's 80th-minute goal settled this Bundesliga Matchday 7 fixture at Signal Iduna Park, giving Borussia Dortmund a 1–0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Dortmund finished with 58 per cent possession, 18 shots to Frankfurt's eight, and 13 corners to Frankfurt's one. The expected goals figures — 1.54 for Dortmund, 0.82 for Frankfurt — tell a similar story.

The numbers behind Frankfurt's night

Their one corner here compares with an average of six across their earlier 2026/27 matches in all competitions. Their 13 touches in the opposition box compare with an average of 29.6. Their expected goals of 0.82 compare with an average of 1.94, and their open-play expected goals of 0.82 compare with an average of 1.51. Their goals minus expected goals in this match was -0.82, against an average of 0.0 across those earlier games.

The rebuild question

Frankfurt's summer saw significant departures: Hugo Larsson, Ellyes Skhiri, Arthur Theate, Aurèle Amenda, Michael Zetterer and Elye Wahi. They were replaced by Raphael Onyedika, Lilian Brassier, Otávio, Noah Atubolu, Noel Futkeu and Malik Pimpong.

What is confirmed is that Adi Hütter is the head coach, and that he has been searching for answers since a 1–4 home defeat to Augsburg in which Frankfurt led 1–0 at half-time.

Hütter has also publicly warned Can Uzun about consistency and team play, saying the player could end up standing in his own way. Uzun began the season as a regular starter but was later left on the bench.

What the next matches will answer

Frankfurt's league record under Hütter in 2020/21 was 16 wins, 12 draws and six defeats, 1.76 points per game over 34 games. Their record so far in 2026/27 is two wins, two draws and two defeats, 1.33 points per game over six games.

The Dortmund match fits a pattern of Frankfurt performances that fluctuate sharply: a 1–4 home defeat to Augsburg, a 3–1 win at Mainz, a 2–2 draw with Freiburg, a 6–0 defeat at RB Leipzig, a 1–0 win over Köln, and now a 1–0 loss at Dortmund.

If the midfield and defensive balance remains fragile, Frankfurt's ability to compete in a tightly packed middle section of the Bundesliga could be at risk.
