Barcelona's 4-1 win at Galatasaray flatters the hosts' brief lead

The scoreline arrived late; the control did not

The scoreline tells you the away side came from behind.

Aleksey Batrakov put Galatasaray ahead in the 28th minute, a deflected right-footed strike from the edge of the box after Rafael Leão cut the ball back. Six minutes later, Barış Alper Yılmaz headed in from Victor Osimhen's flick and Galatasaray thought they had doubled the lead. A VAR review ruled the goal out for offside.

What the chance data says about the first half

Barcelona finished with 71 per cent possession, 22 shots to Galatasaray's five, 11 on target to three, nine big chances to none, and 2.83 expected goals to 0.43. Before Batrakov scored, Anthony Gordon had been denied by Uğurcan Çakır from Pedri's lofted throughball and Dani Olmo had wasted a free header from a Lamine Yamal cross as Barcelona dominated the opening stages. The opener, then, arrived against the flow of the game, and the disallowed second briefly framed an upset that the underlying numbers never supported.

They came into this match averaging 58.2 possession across their earlier 2026-27 fixtures in all competitions; here they had 29. They averaged 407.2 accurate passes; here they managed 202. They averaged 218.8 opposition-half passes; here 59. They averaged 7.6 corners; here one.

Olmo's role and the shape of the comeback

Flick used Olmo as a false nine rather than a traditional centre-forward, with Raphinha absent. Olmo's challenge on Davinson Sanchez set up Cancelo's equaliser, a smart finish shortly before half-time. Two goals in just over three minutes after the interval put Barcelona in control: Fermín López headed in from a Yamal cross in the 50th minute, and Yamal then teed up Gordon in the 53rd. Karim Adeyemi scored the fourth in the 65th.
