Barcelona and Real Madrid have confirmed identical 4-2-3-1 setups for Sunday's El Clasico at Spotify Camp Nou, but the two team sheets tell very different stories. Barcelona are without Dani Olmo, ruled out with a left adductor injury. Real Madrid are without Vinicius Junior, suspended for the fixture.

Those are the two absences that shape the night. Hansi Flick's side have won all nine of their La Liga matches this season and sit top on 27 points. Real Madrid arrive third, six points back. A Barcelona win puts nine points between the clubs.

Barcelona's Shape Without Olmo

Barcelona line up in a 4-2-3-1. The double pivot protects the back four and gives the front four freedom to rotate ahead of it. Without Olmo, the creative load shifts. He was the player Flick's staff waited on. "Olmo? We'll see. He took that hit and had some discomfort. We have to wait," the club said before the team was named. The wait ended with his name absent.

The nine-match winning run is the context for everything Barcelona do here. They have not dropped a point in La Liga in 2026-27. The 4-2-3-1 is the structure that has carried that run, and Flick has kept it rather than reshaping around the missing attacker.

Real Madrid Match the Shape, Minus Vinicius

Real Madrid also name a 4-2-3-1. The mechanics mirror Barcelona's: two holders screening the centre-backs, three attackers behind a lone striker. The symmetry is deliberate enough to note, but the personnel is where the game tilts.

Vinicius Junior's suspension removes Real Madrid's most direct wide threat from the left. Arda Güler and Aurélien Tchouaméni are among the names tasked with carrying the creative and controlling work in his absence. Tchouaméni's role in the double pivot becomes the platform; Güler's positioning between the lines becomes the supply line.

Real Madrid sit six points behind Barcelona with a game at Camp Nou to close it. A defeat leaves them nine adrift. A win cuts the gap to three and reopens the title race.

What the Selections Imply

Both managers chose continuity of shape over reaction to absence. Barcelona did not add a second striker or shift to a back three to compensate for Olmo; they kept the 4-2-3-1 and asked the existing front four to absorb his minutes. Real Madrid did the same without Vinicius, trusting Güler and the midfield pair to generate what the suspended winger normally provides.

The table makes the stakes plain. Barcelona on 27 points, nine wins from nine. Real Madrid on 21, third, needing a result at the ground where Barcelona have been untouchable in the league this season. The team sheets confirm the shapes are the same. The absences confirm the night will be decided by who replaces what is missing.

Kick-off at Spotify Camp Nou is 20:00 UK time, 21:00 in Spain.
